Attempting to install Yamaha CD burner firmware update and am told I first must disable DMA & Auto Insert Notification. When I was using Windows 98 performing these tasks was not difficult. With XP Pro I cannot find the settings.

Already tried to find the settings in the BIOS.

How the H*** do I disable DMA (Direct Memory Access) and the incredibly non-intuitively-named Auto Insert Notification?

    Hlep wil b aprisiated!

    Thamks

    Disabling DMA is equally non-intuitive.....

Device Manager > ATA/ATAPI controllers > Secondary IDE Channel (assuming your burner is on this channel) > right click on Secondary IDE Channel > Properties > Advanced Settings.

    Autoplay ......

My Computer > right click on Yamaha drive > Properties > Autoplay tab and set each option to 'Take no Action'.

    Hey there, PeteC,

    Thanks for the quick response!

Found the Autoplay tab and disabled all "Auto Insert 'Notifications' ". Also found the ATA/ATAPI controllers area, but don't have the "Advanced Settings" option.

Called a buddy of mine who is also running XP Pro and he, too lacks the Advanced Settings button or tab.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks,

    Not really :(

Every search I have made, including on this Board pointed to the method I gave. Another poster had the same problem a while back, but no definitive solution.

Why your Advanced Tab is missing I don't know - might be a function of your particular chipset.

Suggest you start a new thread - in XP forum for starters - like

Advanced Tab in Primary/Secondary ATA/ATAPI Controllers missing

and mention why you need to disable DMA.

Varied answers offered by other people with same problem:

    google

CutNpaste this onto googles search typein line:
"Advanced Tab" Primary Secondary ATA ATAPI Controllers missing "

I'm having a hard time getting the link to work with the results of my search included in the link. Dang it!

When you find yours please update your post with the answer. This is a curiousity.

Hullo out there in the ether,

    I found this:
    UDMA66
According to Microsoft, UDMA66 mode is disabled by default on a Windows computer with an Intel chipset that supports UDMA66. To enable UDMA66 mode you need to:

Make sure the device supports UDMA66 mode
Use a 80-pin IDE cable with the proper pin cut
    Add a registry key
    To add the registry key:
    Start the Registry Editor
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} \ 0000 \
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
    Name the new value EnableUDMA66
Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as it's Value data
    Close the registry editor
Restart Windows for the changes to take effect
When you restart your computer, the UDMA66 will be enabled if it is supported by the hardware.

I tried the above solution and it changed the data file read/extraction speed of the Yamaha CD burner - one very positive and two slightly negative. It didn't alter the audio extraction speed. I then reset the new registry key to "0" and added another registry key which I named "DisableUDMA66" and set it to "1 ".

    Am still having zeroid success.

I did note that the motherboards which use the "application Accelerator" seem to have a known problem with this bug/symptom:

Cut and pasted snippet from one of the google hits:
If you have the Intel Application Accelerator installed, you should know that it is only required for certain processors as listed in their FAQ. Please go tot their website and determine if you need to have the accelerator installed. Removing the application via Control Panel will restore the Advanced Tab that you are missing.

Advanced Tab in Primary/Secondary ATA/ATAPI Controllers missing

RE: Advanced Tab in Primary/Secondary ATA/ATAPI Controllers missing

Goddez provided the answer. Uninstalled Intel Application Accelerator and got the "Advanced" tabs back. Successfully upgraded Yamaha CD burner firmware.

Windows BBS and Goddez chalk up another success story!

    THANKZ!!!!!!

    Yeah!

Lucky guesstimate. Perhaps I should purchase that extra lottery ticket today.

    Your most welcome. :)

    ------

Not knowing what this application is, I think I read a reference that an option, "enabled or disabled ", would make the "advanced tab" on the ides accessible. Or perhaps the dma options were controlled within this utlility. That's why the tab was removed. Control was now done through the app "Application Accelerator ".

I hope you found out if this app was a requirement for your motherboard and, if so, have since reinstalled (perhaps a visit to support site to see if there's an updated version that has this fixed, if it proves to be a bug rather than one of those infamous Perks by design.

    Thanks, Ann.

Maybe NOT a "lucky guesstimate ". I'm certain it has something to do with the name "Ann ".

You see, my mother is Alice Ann, my sister is Beverly Ann, and my niece is Libby Ann.

    Coincidence?

    I think not.
