hi. I'm having a problem with my CD Drive. It doesnt exist!

There is no drive in My Computer for Cd/Dvds.
    There's a C Drive and a Floppy A: drive.

    Nothing else.

I have no idea how it was removed or how I could possibly get it back.

How would I go about re-installing that hard drive?

Take a look in device manager and see if it is there - maybe with a mark indicating it isn't working.

If you are comfortable with the case removed, shut down, remove the case, and reseat the cables connecting CD drive to system board.

Otherwise, some detail about how long it's been missing, if anything unusual happened, and if there are any entries in your event logs at about the time it vanished.

Errr - you have rebooted since it left you, haven't you?

yes, my computer has been rebooted since.

I'll check the device manager again, but I dont think I saw anything relating to the drive there.

hm. well I checked the device manager, there are two sections there that look like they need to be tampered with.

i have "disk drives" and "DVD/CD-ROM Drives "

I assume the one I need to worry about, and the one I am missing in My Computer is "Disk Drives. "

The only one listed under that is "Maxtor 4D040H2 "

once I open that it says:

    "This device is working properly.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter. "

I went through the troubleshooter and they couldnt fix the problem. I also tried updating that driver but there are no new updates.

when I go into the "DVD/CD-Rom Drive" section, it shows me "Lite-On LTR-523275" and when I open that it says

"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. "

I again tried troubleshooting and yielded no results...

    :( suggestions?

Have you followed Newt's advice to plug and unplug the cables to the CD drive?

Well, I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Do I take it out from the front, after taking off the faceplate?

    I cant get it disconnected.

sorry, I just dont really have the need to disassemble my computer very often.

I guess we're talking about a desktop tower rather than a laptop?

With the PC powered down ....

Look on the back of the tower - there should be a few screws positioned along the outer edges. On some towers removing these screws removes the outer case as one - top and two sides, on others each side can be removed separately. Sort that out and remove the sides - generally the left hand side as viewed from the front is sufficient.

Look inside the case and identify the CD drive - easy enough - just relate the frontplate of the drive on the front of the case to the bulk of the drive inside.

On the back of the drive there are two cables - a wide ribbon cable and a small power cable generally with a white connector to the drive. Ease both of these carefully out of their sockets and then replace - doing this will clean up the contacts.

With great care loosen the ribbon connection to the motherboard and reseat.

Before replacing the covers blow out any accumulated dust - carefully, clean the fan blades on the CPU fan and the CPU heatsink - only if you feel confident on this. This has nothing to do with your CD drive, but is good housekeeping.

Then reboot the computer - check out the CD drive both physically with a CD and in Device Manager. If all is OK then power down and replace the covers.

If the Cd drive is still 'missing' uninstall (remove) it through Device Manager, power down and remove the power connector to the drive. Reboot and shut down. Reconnect the power connector to the drive and boot up. If the CD drive is still not found the possibility exists that it has failed.

    More Bad News

He's not alone. As of this morning, my DVD writer disappeared from the computer. The hardware finds it fine, but windows can't use it anymore. What's more, I cannot install or use ANY cd/dvd in this computer.

When I look at the CD with the device manager I see a yellow exclamation point, and the drive doesn't exist in "my computer ". I can uninstall the device and have windows try to re-install it. Windows does find the device and notifies me that there is new hardware ... cdrom. But, then it presents me with a message that says there is a problem with the device. When I look at the driver in device mgr the message says the drivers loaded fine, but windows is unable to locate the device. The message ends with (41).

It isn't the device itself. I've tried 4 different dvd-roms/cd-roms. I've also tried switching to another controller. changed from master to slave, etc. Changed cables. The bios correctly identifies the device and where it is located. XP finds the device and then apparently loses it. This is a stable computer, an MSI KT4V ... AMD1800, 1GB, 120 GB drive,

I tried backing up to the last install that I did on the machine, Windows Restore didn't restore ... said it couldn't do it. I've even tried running windows xp setup and having it "repair" the installation. Took me half a day to recover from that. Am at my wits end. I've moved the "bad" DVD writer to another machine, where it works fine.

The ONLY recent installation was to install Roxio 5 for the DVD. Up till now I'd format a DVD RW at work and just copy files to the disk as needed. I did uninstall Roxio as a first step in all of this. I have lost CDs in the past and always got them back using the steps that you've described. I really don't want to reformat the drive and start over ... I do think it is a problem in windoze.

    Any ideas?

    TIA, Bob

Hi OldBob - Welcome to the Board :)
There are known problems with Roxio and XP - patches are available on their site.

Looks like Roxio may have fouled up your system and some remnants remain. Suggest you look for the patch(s), reinstall Roxio and patch.

    Good luck!

Thanks. The bad news is that when I installed Roxio, I downloaded the latest updates and the patch and installed it all. I have heard many bad things about Roxio 5 (and 7) but I shot myself in the foot anyway.

I'll try again with Roxio .... nothing to lose now. If it doesn't work, I'll have to wait until I have nothing to do for a while and reformat. I hate doing that, since I've got a lot of cool, late model hardware (post xp beta). In the meantime, I'll have to use the optical drives off my server.

If anyone hears of another solution, be sure to let us know.

    Thanks

OK, I have the answer to this problem. It is a registry issue and the steps to resolve it are found in Microsoft KB Article 314060. It is a problem that will specifically occur when you uninstall Roxio 5 (may occur with other software also). I followed the instructions and my drive is BACK. Thanks to all.
