Is it possible to restrict the execution of an application to certain accounts of a multi user winXp Pro machine?

In a PC running on winxp pro with three user accounts, I want to disable an applications in two accounts. Is it possible? ( all three users have the admin right)

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,

Make sure 'simple file sharing' is turned off in 'Folder Options' (can't remember which tab - not XP. I think its the last one)

Once you've done this, right click the files/folder you want to restrict, go to the 'Security' tab and go to 'add' and add the accounts you wish to be able to access the program.

I'm fairly mediocre at computing, but I've done this many times, but on Windows 2000, therefore not facing the 'simple file sharing' problem.
Also note that since all users are administrators, they simply have to go to the 'Security' tab and change the permissions for themself.

Hope this helps, sorry if its a bit vague.

You might also want to consider making two of the three (or maybe all three if you aren't one of the users) super users rather than admins. Lots safer.

But given that you have 3 folks with admin rights, you have to do things a little differently for restricting the users on this one. You absolutely will want to turn off the simple file sharing first. Windows Explorer~folder options~view and it will be the last item on the list.

    1. Locate either the folder containing the app or just the .exe for the app. Folder is better I think. Then Right-click (on the folder or file) and select properties and then security tab.

    2. Click on the advanced button and then uncheck the box by 'Inherit from ..... Click on the Copy button when the choices box pops up. Safety precaution so you don't accidently lock everyone including yourself out.

    3. Add your user account if it isn't there already.

    4. Delete all the other accounts.

    5. Make sure you have Full Control (or give it to yourself).

    quackbal and Newt

I received two messages in my inbox that you have replied to my quary. But unfortunately, I was receiving a Page not found message while trying to access www.windowsbbs.com . It's very queer. Every two or three days I am not able to access this site. Is there any problem with windowsbbs' server or something wrong on my side?

Anyhow, thanks for your responses. I'm at home now and will give a try to your solutions tomorrow morning , as soon as I get my office.

    I appreciate your help.

Next time that happens, try start~run~ipconfig /flushdns and see if you can get to the page/site then.

    Newt,

During the last few hours, I've been able to access windowsbbs only once out of 10 tries. The last time I tried to access this site, I received a very strange page. I even don't what does it mean. I saved the page and uploaded it to my server for wise people like you. This is the mentioned page.

Running ipconfig /flushdns didn't solved the above error page. I'll try it on a page wasn't found case and will report the result.

    Thanks for your help.

I've been having trouble all day, too, particularly with the XP forum, where entire threads are gone, now. I have emails showing replies, but the links take me to the same page as shown above, and refresh doesn't help.

MnInShdw - that particular glitch has nothing whatever to do with you or any other user. The forum software's database engine (MySQL) just developed a severe case of colly wobbles.

One way to restrict applications and to add some of the features of the Group Policy Editor to XP Home is to use Doug's XP Security Console. The free version works within the account in which it is installed and the registered version can be used to access all accounts.

It provides easy access to some settings even for Pro users.

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm

You will need to log off and back on for the new settings to take effect.
