I've heard about the ability to embed audio into image files, so that when you view the image file you also hear audio content. I haven't been able to locate any software or instructions on how to do this. Does anyone know? I'd like to put a bit of audio commentary into some of my photos.

    thanks....looks interesting but I don't like this:

"To hear the audio in a SoundPix JPEG, you need to download the SoundPix Plug-in and view the image in Internet Explorer. "

IE is the last place I want to go to view image files. hmmm. Guess I was hoping for something more usable like an irfanview plugin.

    Hi Scowles,
On this one, I do not think it possible to literally "embed" a
sound file into an image file. The plugin PeteC found is probably
a script file to 1) display the image and 2) load a sound player
    immediately afterwards.
Can you tell us what prompted you to raise the question ?
What made you think "embedding" is possible ?
    regards

You can pretty much embed any file into any other file type. The key is 'can the enmbedded file be opened afterwards!'.

There are ways to embed text and other filetypes in an image file for the purposes of clandestine transfers of data. One needs a special app to extract the embedded data though.

In the above example using the plugin, it's more likely that the image is embedded in the audio file.

I first came across this idea while helping someone with HP's Memory Disk creator. This is a rather simple VCD creating piece of software that comes with Hp scanners and cameras. It had the option to add photos with audio. At first glance I thought it was just the normal way of adding say an mp3 to a group of pictures so you could view a slideshow with sound. But it actually distinguished between the options. It shows jpg's with embedded audio and plays the audio as well. For normal everyday jpgs it gives the option to add an audio track like you do with every other VCD creating software. So I wondered about this thinking it seemed kinda cool. I thought this was probably specific to the HP software, but nowhere does it allow you to actually create image files with embedded audio, it just allows for the handling of these kind of files and the ability to see and hear them. I asked around and found out that some HP digital cameras that have sound recording options (i assumed for mpg files) will also record sound in the still photo files (jpg). The files are downloaded and displayed as with any camera and have a jpg extension, but also have this audio embedded somewhere. If the camera can do it I figured there ought to be some software that does the same thing. I haven't actually seen or played with one of these camera's so I don't know how it works. But thats where I got the idea this was possible...

    ok, an update on the camera angle. I hunted around hp.com for more info on this and came up with 2 references listed under camera specs;

    ...add audio to still images...
...Some cameras let you record brief voice annotations to accompany photos...

so...any ideas? If a camera can do it, there's got to be a means to do it on a computer. From the descriptions it sounds like the user takes a regular picture and then goes back and records his voice over the pic... "in this photo you can see...." or whatever.

The sound is NOT embedded in the image but added to it and the result is likeley a video file with an unmoving video (one frame that remains static). There are tons of apps that do this. Here's one:
