I'm not sure if I'm in the right place to ask this question, but perhaps someone could help. I left my computer on and left for several hours on Sunday. Upon returning whenever I hit my right shift key an amazon home page window pops up. It's as if a hot key was made. Unfortunately, I can't find where or how to fix it. If anyone could help me fix the problem it would be most appreciated.

I was told to go through the registry editor and look for scancode map, but it's not on my computer.

    Thanks,

    Gail

Hi Gail. Welcome to WindowsBBS! :)

Download, install, immediately update and run both Spybot and Ad-aware. Remove all they find. Links are in my signature.

    Thanks, Dave-

I was running spybot but tried adware, too. Neither fixed my problem though they came up with a lot. Any other suggestions?

Download HijackThis from here, unzip it to a permanant folder, open and scan. Save the log. It will open in Notepad. Copy and Paste the entire log here. Don't fix anything yet!

Dave - I certainly appreciate your help. It's very frustrating. I've downloaded and saved it.

Well, you've got some work to do. :) Scan again, place a check beside these and fix.

Remove twain tech in add/remove, then paste this in the start>run box regsvr32 c:\windows\twaintec.dll and hit enter. Then find and delete the .dll
See this page under manual removal for removal of DownloadWare

    Fix this with HJT;
    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Then I recommend you get rid of Windows Messenger. This thread has the info and links you need.

Other than that, looks good to me. Things working OK? Did we fix the original problem?

    Hi Dave-

Ok, I did that. I also diabled messanger. My problem is still there, though. I'm getting better with typing with just the left shift key, though - LOL.

My computer is running much faster than it was, too. Yesterday someone suggested I reset my computer to a few days before the problem began (which was Sunday). I did this, but that also didn't fix my problem.

Ok, the only thing I can think of right off is that somehow a hotkey command was mapped to it. I don't know anything about them, so if you do check it out. If not, type, msconfig in the run box. On the startup tab, uncheck the entry that corresponds to this; [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
and reboot. We'll take it from there.

Did you disable messenger service or Windows Messenger or both?

    EDIT
Just reread the original post. DUH! You already knew it was a mapped hotkey. I'll see what I can find. :)

Check the keyboard settings in control panel. What kind of keyboard do you have?

    Dave-

You know, I ran a test more than once on the keyboard and it said it was working properly... My husband came home for lunch a few minutes ago and said that his partner at work mentioned it could be just a bad keyboard. Figured it was worth a shot as I had an old key board here. Sure enough - it fixed the problem!

THANK YOU so much for all of your help today - it is most appreciated!

You're most welcome! I'm glad you got it fixed. The bright side; you got all the junk out of it in the process. :D

Out of curiosity, and for my own reference later, what kind of keyboard was it? I still want to check out the hotkeys functions, setup and stuff so I can better address this sort of problem in the future. I do think it was a mapped hotkey, and the old one you hooked up just doesn't have that function. The keyboard was functioning correctly otherwise?

    Dave-

Yes the keyboard was functioning fine besides the right shift key.

It was a HP keyboard which came with our hp pavilion mx75. Shouldn't you be able to map certain keys yourself? We did go into the keyboard settings yesterday but couldn't find anywhere where you could change the hot keys.

So.... If I buy a new keyboard, my problem will most likely return. I'm glad I held on to this one!

If you would like me to check anything on my computer that might help you, please let me know. I'll certainly have to address the problem again if a new keyboard is going to do the same thing.

    Dave-

Do you know anything about stickykeys? I just hit the shift five times (making sure it wasn't popping up) and it came up with a pop up saying pressing the shift key 5 times turns on sticky keys. Sticky Keys lets you use shift, CTRL, ALT or Windows Logo keys by pressing one key at a time. I went to settings as it told me to to disable it. The old keyboard is still working the same - shift brings me to amazon, but the new keyboard isn't, but I disabled it. Question is - if that's it - how do you disable it once it's enabled and I'm assuming it's only enabled to that particular keyboard?

    Hope this makes sense...

mx75 is the monitor. Yes, you should be able to map the keys, but at the same time, I've never seen or heard of mapping a shift key by itself, which does suggest that the keyboard is faulty. Did you uncheck the hotkeys entry from startup tab, reboot and try it? If you did and problem was still there, it would almost have to be a bad KB, and I'm chasing my tail.

In the keyboards properties/settings, if it's an intenet keyboard, there would be a tab for buttons which you could change the functions of certain keys.

It's working OK now though, so just go on about surfin and worry about what happens with a new one, when you get one. :D :D

Saw your new post while I was previewing this reply. Sticky keys is for when someone can't press ctrl+alt+del at the same time. It allows them to press each key one at a time to do the same thing.

Are you saying that now the old keyboard is going to amazon.com when the right shift key is pushed and the new keyboard isn't anymore?

    LOL, Dave-

No - if the old one was doing it now and the new wasn't - I wouldn't be here - I'd be in the garage scouting out Bob's sledge hammer....

Sorry, the keyboard is a HP Model No. 5181. At least I know it has nothing to do with the sticky keys.

Again - thanks for your help!

    Well Gail, this one's got me stumped. :( The only other things I could suggest, if you want to try using the original keyboard are;

1: Check with HP for a driver update.
2: If you have the drivers cd, uninstall the keyboard software and reinstall it.

Frankly, keyboards are pretty cheap these days and it would be faster and easier to get a new one.

The sledge hammer idea sounds like a good one for it! :D

I have a new Dell 4600 and I just noticed today that there is a feature on the keyboard called Filter Keys. If you hold down the right shift key for 8 seconds a dialog box pops up which says: "Holding down right shift key for 8 seconds turns on Filter Key. This slows down the keyboard repeat rate. It also give you an option to 1. Keep filter key -ok, 2. Cancel Filter key -cancel, 3.Deactivate setting - click setting.

I don't know if this if similiar to the problem that is being discussed, but I thought you might be interested.
