    two different things here...

    The "Edit" button and its associated dropdown menu correspond with File|Edit and with "select default HTML editor" in Tools|Internet Options|Programs

    (unless you are looking at an MSHTML page where <Meta>ProgId is defined as something like Word, in which case the settings are overriden and the appearance of the Edit button changes to Word's icon...)(but I think you can still "get out" of having to use Word with its associated unavoidable mangling :mad: by selecting from the Edit button's dropdown menu)

    View|Source is rather different, more like Netscape or Opera's view source function

    even trying all the things suggested above, encoding etc., I still cannot get View|Source to grey out, or to fail to work!

    FWIW there seems to be no <meta> definition for charset on this page... haven't tried BBS home page... of course there might be other ways to define it!

    best wishes, HJ

    Most here already know this .
    if You want another program to view source and it doesn't give that option ,, Internet options > program's tab wont permit changing
    I suppose this is the same for XP win 2x But cannot say for sure

    edit to include the programs path and merge this reg file
    best to have IE closed

    (courtesy of ztreg's Xsetup)
    So open a new word-pad or notpad document copy everything between the lines and paste it there ,, the regedit4 must be in the upper left corner,, then save as any file with a name such as
    "viewsouce.reg" leave the quotes ,, and double click that reg file

    =======
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]
    @= "C:\\Program Files\\UltraEdit\\uedit32.exe "

    =======

    Nope. Don't have auto-select checked. I've been watching it for the past several days though and I almost get the feeling that it's stuck in auto-select even though it's not checked. As I browse the web the encoding constantly changes. Even stranger, some pages that I can't view the source on one time I visit, I can view it the next time even though the encoding stays the same for that particular page. Even stranger still, the encoding isn't necessarilly always set the same each time I visit a particular page. It seems to change at random. I just checked the encoding that's selected for this reply page and it's now set to western european (windows). I've never seen it select that one before for the pages on this sight. I suppose it probably has, I just haven't looked at the right times. Usually it's set to western european (iso) at this sight. Even though it's currently set to (windows) , my edit button is still greyed out however. Wieeeerd!

    Just now I checked Microsofts homepage and it's set to WE (ISO). I then checked their knowledge base and it's set to unicode (utf-8) . I can view the source on their homepage but not on the knowledge base page. Other times I'm able to view the source of the same page whether or not the same encoding is selected. All of this is with auto-select off. I can see absolutely no rhyme or reason to any of it. It just seems to do it's own thing. I've pretty much decided it's just another one of those little critters that crawl around in everybodies PCs.

    Having said all that, I still think it's odd that I've never been able to view the source of the pages at this site. It seems to be the only common thread in this, at least as far as I'm concerned.

    Don't spend any time on this for me. It doesn't matter if it gets fixed or not. It's more a curiosity thing that's got me going with it. My curiosity has just about run out though. :) If anybody ever accidently ran into the answer for this it would be nice to know but I can certainly live without it.

    As a side note, I do have Mozilla Firebird installed and I don't notice any of this problem with it. I can view the source of these pages just fine. Yeah, I know what you Mozilla users are thinking to yourselves. :) I could switch browsers, but it seems to me that if I do that, I'll just be trading one set of bugs for another. But that's a matter for a different forum. :D

    You're not alone there Zander. Although I don't have any of the other problems/symptoms, and I can change to Western European (Windows) and view source here, it seems to always set itself back to (ISO). Will start checking it at other sites also. Got me curious now! :)

    Im also having trouble viewing source code on any web page I try- I recieve a pop up "cannot find file 'notepad' (or on of its components). make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available "
    My OS is Win 98- I dont have the install CD as recommended for win95 on another thread.
    how do I find or DL notepad .exe - and does any one know what is meant by the 'file and pathname and required libraries" in this pop-up?

    FYI-
    I just repaired a system that had the QAZ virus. Notepad would not work until repaired.

    Also, there is a spyware called ParityScan that can get installed by "drive by" on some sites. This spyware sometimes affects how Notepad integrates with IE.

    I just chunked desktop icon for notepad and view source works fine now. The idea came from a post early in this thread. After creating a new icon it still won't show view source, so it will stay in trash can for now.

    Now that's interesting. Which post (or what info) put you onto that fix?

    I found that interesting also. Assuming it's from Lonny's post.
    My only shortcut to notepad is on the start menu.
