    Hey folks:

Everything was going just great. Then the boot record bombed out. The hard drive went dead. No one was able to fix.

Tried to reinstall Windows XP Pro again but it got to checking "devices" and went into a loop - famous blue screen !

So, got a new hard drive - set as master and installed XP.

That gave me a new copy of Outlook Express.

We have set up a few addresses and the new copy works fine.

Problem is that My good address book and quite a few e-mails not yet transferred to other media are still on my old drive "c ".

Made the old drive a slave so the old "c" is now "d" and Windows explorer reads all the files real good.

    Question:

Where are the Outlook Express data I'm looking for stored on the old drive? And if we should find them how can we transfer to the
new drive "c" copy of Outlook Express?

The world won't quit turning if we are completly zapped - just thought someone may help recover the data before we reformat
the old drive so it can be an extra drive.

    Thank for listening.

If they're in the default location they'll be here.

    D:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\long number\Microsoft\Outlook Express

To import them into OE, open OE, click file>import>messages.

The address book will be a file with a .wab extension. Do a search of the old drive for "*.wab" (without the quotes, with the asterisk and dot).

Once found, use File>Import>Address book in Outlook Express to browse to the location and import it.

Since you're starting out with a brand new copy of OE, you might want to change where it keeps its email data for easier backup. To do that, in OE go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store folder button. I change it to an "Email" folder I create in My Documents to make backup easier.

Thanks for the address book pointer Miz. I completely forgot about it when I posted my answer. Guess I have to pay closer attention.

Do you save your Docs (including your WAB and dbx files) on a partition different than the one your OS is on? I keep it all on my second partition, and I have never lost it except on purpose. I also burn a cd or two of the whole thing once a month, or so (I hate losing family pics and manuscripts!) I keep my OE stuff in My Docs for convenience- that way I don't forget to burn it, too.

Cheers from Ohio- with about 4 inches of snow, so far- boy, will the kids be happy in the morning!

Johanna - nooo...I'm far too lazy to mess with partitions, both when installing an OS and when using the computer. I have everything on one huge partition and keep everything in My Docs that I can.

oowee--It may help to know that in Win98 Outlook Express the default Store folder is
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express
You learn that from Tools|Maintenance tab|Store Folder.
    Perhaps something similar in Outlook?

Do a search for *.pst and see where the files are located.
