    On my Firefox screen there is a little box to the far right on the top with a "G" and a downward arrow in it. I assumed this is supposed to be Google but I can not get anything to happen when I click on it. What am I doing wrong or what don't I understand?

    Try:

    enter a search term
    press enter
    this should search google.

    enter a search term
    clicking on the 'G'
    selecting find in this page (the icon should change)
    press enter
    this should attempt to find your search term on the current page

    enter a search term
    click on the 'G'
    select google (the icon should change back to the default 'G')
    press enter
    you should be able to search google again

    apparently you can go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org to add more seach engines

    A couple of alternatives:

    Googlebar (if you use google a lot)
    http://googlebar.mozdev.org

    Mozilla Custom Keywords (this requires a bit of work)
    http://www.mozilla.org/docs/end-user/keywords.html

    good luck

    tranquilo

    Many thanks Tranquilo for your help. I will try all those things and report back.

    I just installed today's nightly( whatever that means). If I click on the small arrow next to the G, it drops down and shows Find in this page, with selections of Google or Add engines. You have to to aim for the G or the tiny arrow for any action. Or, as "tranquilo" said, enter your term. as Google is default.

    One of many alternatives:

    Moz 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7b installed several searchplugins by default in the:

    <drive>\program files\.........\searchplugins\ directory.

    These were accessed via the edit | preferences| internet search|->drop down dialog box.

    You can copy the contents of this folder to you to your FF - searchplugins directory and they will be accessable via the drop down dialog mentioned above.

    WFM

    I read that you can create your own search plugin (mycroft site) but have yet to succeed.

    And, if you find the little down-arrow in the search window as annoying as I do (I use only Google, anyway), edit the userChrome.css file in your profile's Chrome folder by adding the following:
    • menu[label= "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder"] { display: none !important; }

      /* Remove the drop arrow in the Search bar */
      .search-proxy-button-dropmarker { display:none !important; }
