I know that it is best to install Win2000 after installing Win98SE. But after deciding to have a Win2K-only machine, I find I want to have 98 on there also as a dual boot.

Is there a way to install 98 afterwards or will I have to remove 2000, install 98 and then install 2000?

This is the way I did it about a month or two ago. I did it only once and I am recalling this from memory so if you need accurate step-by-step instructions, you'll have to wait on an expert. But, here goes:

I installed Windows 98 just as I would if the machine were clean. Be sure you do not install Windows 98 into the same folder as Windows 2000 is in already. Windows 2000 usually wants to put itself into a WINNT folder so this should not be a problem.

After a successful installation of Windows 98, I started an installation of Windows 2000. During the installation process (some time after the first reboot), you will be offered the opportunity to do an installation or a repair. Choose Repair. After choosing to Repair, you will be offered to use the repair console or make all possible repairs automatically. You want to choose to make all possible repairs automatically.

The best I remember, this is an approximation of what I did. If there is something essential I left out, perhaps someone more knowledgable will come along and help us.

Will work only if your C: drive was formatted FAT32 and not NTFS. If so, above suggestion will work. You might be lucky and win98 will add itself to the boot menu without disrupting your w2k boot - sometimes does and sometimes doesn't - running win98 setup from a DOS boot with /ntldr switch sometimes helps. If it doesn't, respect your w2k boot a repair install of w2k will fix it, as noted. Or, more simply, instead of selecting complete repair install, you could select Inspect Boot Files from the repair menu. Or, you could open the Recovery Console and run the command "fixboot ". You might first make yourself a w2k boot floppy, so you can access w2k while you're fussing - to do this format a floppy using w2k and then to it copy ntldr, boot.ini, and ntdetect.com from C:\. If the win98 install does disrupt your w2k boot, you can boot with the floppy and it will bring up your w2k boot menu and start w2k for you.
