I am hoping that somebody can help me. When I logged onto the internet yesterday (using Netscape 7.1) and went to check my emails, a message box popped up that I need to create a new account. Also, all of my emails and folders have disappeared from my mailbox. I checked and my address book and bookmarks still seem to be intact. I an not sure but it seems that I have lost my profile. I am afraid that if I go through the process of setting up a "new" account that I will loose all my old emails, etc.
I am hoping that somebody will be able to explain how to fix this... step-by-step if possible. Thank you very much in advance. - Jill

    Welcome to the Forum, jnhdolls!

    Hi Jill,

Go ahead and set up the new Mail Account.
    Close Netscape

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to your Mail Account Folder
    See: Profiles Folder Location
Your Mail Accounts will be similar to:
    mail.accountname.net
    mail.accountname-1.net

Open the Inbox in each of these accounts in order to determine which of the accounts contain your mail.
Copy the path to the mail account folder containing your mail
    E.G., C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\username\*.slt\Mail\mail.accountname.net
To avoid a typo, with the Mail Account folder (which contains your mail) open, copy the "Address" field at the top of the Windows Explorer Window.

    Open Netscape Mail
Click on: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
In the right panel, scroll to the bottom of the page.
In the "Local directory" field paste the path to the mail account folder containing your mail, which you just copied.
    Close Netscape, then reopen
    Your Mail should be intact.

Post back if you have further questions.

    Ramona :D

emails back but can't send or receive

    Hi Ramona-
Thanks for replying! I have my emails back by opening a new account... actually I now have three accounts showing up but only one has all of my past emails. Now I am unable to send or receive any emails at all. I get a message saying "The PASS command did not succeed. Mailserver pop.ameritech.yahoo.com responded: invalid user/password "

When I go to the account settings of my old account (the one that contains all my old emails) the only thing that comes up is "The following is a special account. There are no identies associated with it" and then there is a box to enter the account name (which I entered my email address) and then the Local Directory.

    How can I fix this?

Again, I am using Netscape 7.1 and Windows ME. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Thanks you very much and I look forward to hearing from you. -Jill

almost there... haveing problem receiving messages

Ok... I had some of the settings mixed up. I fixed them and everything seems to be in the right place at least. But I still am not receiving new messages. I know I have new messages because I have been using Yahoo to check my mail today.

When I click on Get Messages it accepts my password, but it says that there are no new messages. Do I have something else ******* up?

Thanks for all your help... hopefully this is the last problem. -Jill :(

    Hi Jill,

Good, because I was just about to post to you, but I see now that you receiving help on another Forum.

If you retrieve your Mail via the Webmail interface, then you won't be able to view that Mail via Netscape Mail & Newsgroups.

    Have you selected in:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Accounts | Server Settings

Check for new message at startup
Check for new messages every 10 minutes
    Automatically download new messages

    trouble receiving email

Yes, I have those options checked. I even tried to send myself an email and I still didn't receive it.

I have always used Yahoo to check my email when I am away from my home computer. When I return home and check my email the message I left in my inbox when I was using Yahoo then trasfer to my Netscape inbox.

For the life of me I can't figure out what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :) -Jill :(

I can send... just can't receive...

I can send emails but I can't receive them.

The emails are sending just fine but I am not receving any (and I know that I have new emails because they are there when I check my mail through Yahoo... my "test emails" are not even coming through).

Help! I am about to throw this computer out the window!

Thanks for all your help... if I could just get this one last problem fixed... :p

    :) -Jill

    Jill,

Could be that your Inbox is corrupt. Do this, with Netscape and Quick Launch closed:

Open Windows Explorer and open your Mail Account Folder
    Delete the Inbox.msf file
Don't delete the Inbox file without the MSF extension. It contains your Mail

Open Netscape, and send yourself an e-mail. Can you receive?

    If no joy:
    Close Netscape & Quick Launch
Open Windows Explorer and open your Mail Account Folder
Rename the Inbox file (with no extension) to BADInbox.

    Open Netscape
Send yourself an e-mail. Can you receive?

    Let us know the results.

    email is fixed!!!

Thanks for all your help! I have fixed the problem!!! I remembered from an earlier problem that I can't use the @ symbol in my settings, I have to substitute the % sign for the @ sign so with a little correcting within my account settings I got it to work. I think I just needed to get away from the computer for a while, eat some dinner and then try it again. If that didn't work I would have resorted to a bottle of wine to clear my head... ha ha :D

Thanks again for all your help... I really really appreciate it! Have a ownderful day! :) -Jill

    Hi Jill,

Way to go! I hear you, and it is usually when you walk away from the problem, that the solution suddenly dawns on you. I'm delighted that you have Netscape up and running.

Don't be surprised if this issue recurs, as it is a bug in Netscape 7.1. Just remember to back up that Profiles folder on a frequent basis.

When you feel confident with your current setup, and feel that your Profile is stable, then you might want to give some serious thought to moving on to Mozilla. It is a very stable browser, with the look and feel of Netscape, only smaller, and faster.

    special account

I too made it through the recovery of lost emails, thanks to the help found here. Like jnhdolls I wound up with a spare "special account" that I can not delete. Its just an annoyance but I would like to get rid of it. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Forum, deedeeyen!

    Hi deedeeyen,

Highlight Local Folders, and click on "View Account Settings ".

In the "Account Name" field you should enter "Local Folders "

In the "Local directory" field you should enter the path to the newly created Mail Account Local Folders, e.g.,
    C:\.......\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\Local Folders

There should be only one Local Folders in the Mail folder. Local Folders is used for your "Sent" newsgroup messages.

When you view your Mail folder in Windows Explorer, how many Local Folders are listed there, and what are the file names?
