Had been using MS Fax that comes with WinXP for some time but due to a seige of "Junk Faxes" I unchecked the "Enable Receive" box.

Then, I wanted to receive a Fax which I knew was coming, so I rechecked the "Enable Receive" box.

However, MS Fax will not answer the incoming call. Tried Manual Answer with no luck.

My internet connection as well as downloads, through the same modem, work just fine.

I can SEND faxes, but not RECEIVE.

Is there a setting in (say) Services that might disable Fax Receipt? I have the MS & Norton Internet Security Firewalls enabled.

Sys Ref: Sony VAIO, 3 GHz P4, WinXP Media Center Edition with SP1, 512 MB RAM, Agere 56k v.92 modem, 50 GB free.

    Help, Larry

You could try uninstalling Fax and reinstalling it - with a cold reboot inbetween ....

    Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

You could also try disabling the XP Firewall - don't really need both although it generally co-exists with other firewalls without a problem - and check NIS settings.

    Thanks PeteC:

I'm a bit hesitant to uninstall as I don't have a WinXP CD. It came preinstalled but without a CD.

I did check and Windows shows it as fully installed.

    What are NIS settings?

    Thanks again, Larry

    Install/Uninstall

Since the fax program is a WIN XP program, uninstalling it through the windows uninstaller simply removes it from programs but does not prevent reinstalling it. You should have no problem doing this. Uninstalling a non-windows program might permanently remove it.

    Thanks!

    I guess I'll try it.

Any idea what NIS Settings are?

    Thanks again,
    Larry

    control panel

Just discovered you have to go into control panel, then faxes and printers, then hit fax and go to properties. You must enable fax receive on one of those tabs shown under properties. This should solve your problem.

Yes close. But in my setup you go Settings>Control Panel>Printers and Faxes>Fax>Fax Console>Tools>Configure Fax, then check one or both boxes called "ENABLE ", one is SEND and one is RECEIVE. Then you check either Manual or Automatic and Number of Rings.

I've checked them both and set it Auto 2 rings.

    But it doesn't answer.

Here's the dialog I get after configuring Fax:

    Configuration Summary:

    Devices configured to send faxes:
    Agere Systems AC'97 Modem
The TSID of these devices is 818-701-9599 EXCEL.

    Devices configured to receive faxes:
    Agere Systems AC'97 Modem
Devices are configured to automatically answer incoming fax calls after 2 rings.
The CSID of these devices is 818-701-9599 EXCEL.

    Received faxes will be:
    Stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Lawrence\My Documents\In Faxes.

Here's an interesting test I ran.

I have a two-line phone on my desk. #1 Line is my Fax/Internet Line, #2 is my home phone line.

I tried calling from line #2 to line #1. It rang, but MS Fax didn't answer after two rings or more, so I clicked Fax Console>Tools>Receive Fax Now and got the following message:

"The modem is busy with another fax call. Please try again later. "

    What?

    Best, Larry

    A Real Fax

Is it possible that the fax will not answer unless it hears a fax signal? Simply calling it and expecting it to pick might not work. Has someone actually tried to send you a real fax? and the machine did not pick it up? Try receiving a real fax if you haven't done so.

It started yesterday with a real fax being sent and it just rang on for about 10-12 rings.

I'm fairly sure I'd hear the initialization tones, but I'll try again with a real fax today.

Interesting that in Device Manager>Ports (COM & LPT) only lists LPT1 not COM 3 which the modem properties say the modem is connected to.

I tried Disabling both Win and Norton Firewalls to no avail.

Another interesting thing is I get a Norton Trojan Horse Warning (127.0.0.1) every time I call from Line #2 to Line #1, so I added 127.0.0.1 as allowed, but it didn't help either.

Ran Modem diagnostics and it said SUCCESS.

However, in Modem Advanced Properties it says port being monitored NONE. Tried clicking "update" but nothing would happen.

    Thanks,
    Larry

Tried uninstalling Fax, rebooting, reinstalling and resetup.

Still won't answer incoming, but the Fax Monitor pops up with a ringing phone sound and says it failed!

Task Bar flashes a Failed Incoming Fax message.

    ???

    Larry,

I'm working totally in the dark here - I send the occasional fax, but do not make use of the receive facility.

Wonder if any of these MS Knowledge Base articles will help ....

HOW TO: Enable and Configure the Fax Service in Windows XP

HOW TO: Receive a Fax in Windows XP

HOW TO: Troubleshoot Common Fax Problems in Microsoft Windows XP

Cannot Receive a Fax or the CallerID Feature Does Not Work

    AFAIK - Device manager will only show COM1 & COM 2 - Com 1 & 3 are common, COM 2 & 4 are common.

    Thanks PeteC:

The "Cannot Receive a Fax or the CallerID Feature Does Not Work" URL looks interesting.

I'll go modify my registry and let you know!

    Best,

    Thanks PeteC:

    That did it!

Added a new registry key to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    MediaCenter\Service

called "UseTelephony" with a string value of 0.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

    All the best,
    Larry
