Hi, I have just installed a CD burner which uses Nero Express software. When installing Nero I get a Message which tells me I have to update 2 files "comctrlx86" and "DCOM 1.3 ".

    I am running Windows 95 version 4.00 950B.

I have followed various links to Microsoft and have emailed with Microsoft who tell me they no longer support '95. The page they used to have with those link is no longer available. Can anyone help me Please, I am doing this for a non profit childrens centre, who need to back up files of the childrens details.

    Thank you Lissy :)

OOPS! Somehow I missed the comctrlx86. Unfortunately, I've not been able to come up with it. Everything I find points to the same page which always comes up "page not found ". It may be available out there somewhere but I can't find it. What version of IE are you running? If you update IE the comctrlx86 files will be updated also. Problem is, I think the highest version of IE that's supported by win95 is IE 5.5 . I could be wrong about this. I don't remember for sure. I can tell you that win95 for sure doesn't support anything higher. Can somebody else help here?

If nobody else answers, I'd try installing IE 5.5 if you don't already have it installed. If you already have 5.5, I really don't know what to tell you other than to update the OS to win98 and then install IE 6. Hold tight for a bit. Maybe somebody else will come up with something.

If you are trying to install or update COMCTL32.DLL, click here, you want 50comupd.exe. You may want to go ahead and install the others listed under System Updates.

My hat's off to you mark if that's what Lissy1 needs. I went through umpteen web pages (including the Google groups) and never found anything that didn't point to the same MS page (page not found) . Hope this is what he/she needs. How'd you come across this?

I used a google search for comctrlx86.asp, went to the second link, you know the first one is dead, found the filename, 50comupd.exe, then did this search, the Nero page is the first hit.
This is the new MS link.
