Is there a way to import the email data in a c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/mailaccount folder to Outlook Express?

I've had no problems importing data from c/programfiles/netscape/users/username/mail, and the files seem in most ways similar - folders are .sbd, all others are archive files - the only real difference is that some of the c/programfiles/netscape/users/username/mail files are described as SNM files, which I didn't find in c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/mailaccount, and in c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/mailaccount, some files have a .msf extension that I didn't find in c/programfiles/netscape/users/username/mail.

However, when I try to import the c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/mailaccount data, I get an error dialog stating:

"No messages can be found in this folder, or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open. "

As one of several other reasons, I'm trying to import to OE because Netscape 7.1 Mail & Newsgroups Settings - Server Settings will only allow the use of one archive folder from c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/ *per* account. My office switched email hosts, and so we have *three* accounts - the only way I've found to have access to all three is to have one active and two dummy accounts, each corresponding to one of the three archive folders in c/windows/applicationdata/mozilla/username/Mail/.

They all have some overlap in folders, one covering the period 2002-7/2003, the next one 7/2003-3/22/2004, the last 3/2004-today, and each with a set of folders A, B, C, etc. I want to be able to have one program with one set of folders accessing all the emails from 2002-today, as opposed to having either an Acct. 1 -> A, B, C... - Acct. 2 -> A, B, C... or an A-A'-A''-B-B'-B'' kind of setup.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated -

    Many thanks,

    Christine

    Hi Christine,

See this page for importing Mail to OE:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7mailtoOEorO.html
    Close Netscape and Quick Launch
Backup all Mail Folders, or the entire Profiles Folder:

    Rename the Archive folders:
    2002-7/2003 Inbox1, Sent1, etc.
    7/2003-3/22/2004 - Inbox2, Sent2, etc.
3/2004-today I assume is the current Mail Account?

Copy the Inbox1, etc., and the Inbox2, etc., files to the 3/2004-today Mail Account Folder.

When you open Netscape, you will see those folder listed as subfolders under the Mail Account.

Open the Inbox1 folder, highlight (Ctrl+A) all messages, left click, and drag the message to the active Inbox.

Repeat the above steps for each Mail folder.

    Consolidating multiple folders - followup

    Dear Ramona:

Followed all your instructions on renaming and copying files - almost everything seems in order. Unfortunately, about two-thirds of the way down my Netscape list of folders (copying Sent1 and Sent2 into Sent, etc.), I got an error message stating that the messages were not moved because there was insufficient space, recommending that I "compact folders." Not really sure what this means or what to do about it.

Independent of this message, how can I get rid of the now-empty Sent1, Sent2, etc. folders? Can I delete them in the Netscape left-hand navigation menu? Will such a deletion remove the storage files I previously copied into the current mail folder, or have the changes made in dragging/dropping messages been saved somehow in profiles/username/Mail/mailaccount? I am, unfortunately, too stupid to know how all this works.

Ramona.............I have become thoroughly convinced that you are my fairy godmother. I would not have been able to make it through this week without you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Hi Christine,

LOL! I like being a Fairy Godmother. :D

In the Mail window, click on:
    File | Compact Folders
Compacting, or compressing mail folders releases unused space for other applications. You should do this as routine maintenance, especially if deleting, moving, etc., Mail.

You can delete those unused folders in Netscape, in the left pane of the Mail window. Once deleted... compact your folders. I'm not really clear on this question:
Will such a deletion remove the storage files I previously copied into the current mail folder.

When you close Netscape, the changes you've made will be written to the prefs.js, and all the editing in Mail & Newsgroups will be saved.

Now that you have everything in order, back up the entire Profiles folder, after deleting the Cache folder, history.dat, and XUL.mfl files. Do this routinely, on a daily basis, so you will always have a good backup.

    Ramona :D
