Recently I just got done with a brand new install of XP professional on my Dell Laptop. After getting everything installed that I need I went through and defrag and scanned for spamware an such.

Now I know I should be worried that I didnt pick up anything else from just getting patches and drivers but when i look at my Task Manager I see alot of svchosts.exe running and with some other things.

I'm including a pic that I took of what was running in the Task Manager and hopfully some people can help me get rid of some of the things that are running and just make my system more clean.

    SIDE NOTE
    Apoint.exe - laptop touchpad
Dadapp.exe - dell app for buttons on laptop
    razerofa.exe and razertra.exe - mouse apps

One last thing, does anyone have a list of the services that I can turn off/dont need running? I know I have some running that I dont need I'm just unsure of which ones that i can turn off or not. If it helps my laptop, is normally on a modem connection and from time to time a lan when I'm at a friends house.

    Thanks again all.

-I posted this on the Spyware/virus forum as well-

(edit note: as mentioned in the posting rules, please don't Double Post. You are new so I just merged the XP thread into this one but double posting just gets things confused - Newt)

    Welcome to the boards!

Were you perhaps thinking of Black Viper's site?

Black vipers site for info on xp services:
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

    AND

    http://www.geocities.com/ziyadhosein/xpserv1.htm

AND A cut and paste from Kellys Korner:(scroll to services)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_s.htm

Services - Here is a way to figure out which services to set as Automatic and which to set as manual or disabled.

Step1: Set ALL your services to *manual* setting.
Step2: Reboot computer and wait for windows XP to load. XP will boot pretty slowly, since it has to turn on each service
separately. Use your computer for a bit, doing what you normally do during a computing session. This will allow any
other services to activate (such as DHCP or other services that didn't load during the boot process).
Step3: Go back to the list of services, and see which ones are Started. Change the services that are marked as Started, to
*Automatic*. This way windows will automatically load all of the services that you normally use, and the ones that
you don't use will stay unloaded.

Tip: Services Running - Alter to Improve Performance

DNS Client - Automatic / Manual - This service is responsible for DNS lookup so disable at your own risk!
IPSEC Services - Automatic / Manual
    Messenger - Automatic / Manual
Remote Registry - Automatic / Manual
Automatic Updates - Automatic / Disabled
Computer Browser - Automatic / Manual
Distributed Link Tracking Client - Automatic / Manual
Portable Media Serial Number - Automatic / Disabled
Task Scheduler - Automatic / Manual

These should have all the information you need.

Multiple instances of svchost.exe running is normal. The service is a sort of generic wrapper applet that contains various .dll files it manages.

To see exactly what is there
start~run~cmd followed by (after the "DOS" window opens)
    tasklist /svc
