    Hi all,

Bought a new 52X CD burner for a friend. When I got it to read a disk there was quite a loud vibrating noise. I actually wondered if the s'c'r'e'w's were not tight, but remembered checking them all.
There may possibly be something else slightly loose in the case, but should these drives cause that much vibration? I tried a different disk when I was there again the other day and it was not quite as loud, although it may not have been reving at full speed.

Think there is any cause for concern?

    Matt,

    What brand?

I ask because it does seem to make a difference.

I have a Creative 52x that is super quiet. Before that I bought a Delta 52x drive that is the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned. The drive is so loud when it spins up that it rivals my blender in noise output.

If I pull down the door on the Delta and place my finger on the cd tray the noise lessens but the vibration is something else. It seems that the Delta is more poorly constructed which is what I think generates the noise and vibration when the disk is spinning so fast.

Not sure it is something to be concerned about unless you start to notice damage to discs or read errors. My Delta has never failed to read a disc or damaged one but the noise is extremely annoying :D

    Cheers,

    ICE

    :D Hi ICE,

It is a Liteon. I have bought a few and recommend them. Haven't had trouble/noise before, but haven't installed such a fast "burner" before. I notice some other 52X CD rom drives when they rev up,but not as loud as this.

Encountered the same problem with a Delta drive a couple of years ago and have never bought another one since. Lite-On is about my favorite burner and have never had the first problem. As to the 52x32x52 specifically, same flawless performance and have to have gone through at least 40-50 of em' - you may have a bad drive - it happens.

    ;)

Yes, i will try the "finger trick" to try and locate what is vibrating.

If it seems to be "too much" vibration coming from the drive itself, I will see about returning it (the owner knows my face now and gives me a big welcolme when I come in :)... replaced my bother's modem when I think it got lightning strike and lent us a "fill-in" till the replacement arrived, so may not be a drama).
