    Does anyone know how you can change the file extensions on a number of files at once. For instance someway to highlight 10 .txt files and change them all to doc files at once. I hope I explained sufficiently.

    Open a command window in the folder containing the files.

    At the prompt:

    ren *.txt *.doc

    <Enter>

    Abraxas,
    Sounds exactly like what I need, but at the risk of sounding stupid, how do you open a command window in an XP folder?

    There are a few ways.

    You can install the Command Here Power Toy. Then, right-click a folder and choose to open a command window from there.

    Or, you can open a command window from Run: cmd and change directories until you get there (the hard way for me---a poor typist).

    Or, you can install this handy Command Prompt Explorer Bar. Then, from any folder in Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, hit Ctrl+M and a command window opens at the bottom.

    Or, like me, do all 3 :D

    Of course, it's very handy to have this easy access to the command prompt for this and other purposes, but there may be other renaming tasks you'd like to do sometime, like naming files incrementally, adding post-fixes or pre-fixes, etc.

    PublicWare File Renamer is useful for those tasks:
