ok i had 2 computers, i took one hard drive from one computer and mastered it on the secondary ide channel on the main computer. the hard drive would not detect in my main computer so i take out the hard drive and put it back in the computer it came from and set it as the master on the primary ide chain. now that hard drive will not boot, even though the bios detects it and the jumpers are set correct.

the main computer is XP Pro and the other computer is Win98.
any ideas, i atleast want to get the data off the hard drive.

    quick reply please.

The partition is probably no longer active - it has to be active to boot.

    ;)

Did you try to slave it on main PC IDE 1, go into disk management and initialize it?

    hi,

fdisk/mbr won't do it. you must run fdisk, access the drive and make it active, c: if more than one partition.

    Hope jumpers are ok.

Have you tried rebooting to safe mode + last good settings that worked?

    Hi.

Just a note. Some hdds installed as the only hdd on the ide port won't work if they are jumpered as master. They will only work if they are jumpered as master when there is a slave hdd installed on the same ide port. You might check and be sure the jumpers shouldn't be on neutral pins. The changes you made to the hdd also might not let it work if you do change the jumpers to neutral but worth a try.

yeah i tryed every possible jumper combo still nothing.

but its to late to do anything now,, i already ran ontrack and recovered some files, that was good enough I'm just scared for life when i hook up someone Else's drive to my PC.

BTW my hard drive was going bad and caused the hard drives that were hooked to my computer to mess up i think.

I have a PC with the infamous ECS K7S5A mainboard in it. Sometimes if I mess around with the drives, the board doesn't recognize the primary drive anymore. I have to clear the CMOS to get it to be recognized - this always does the trick.
