I save these trailers to show to others all the time with version 6.3. What version are you using? Is disk caching enabled? If so, you should be able to find the .mov files by searching the temp internet files (XP's search does not look there by default, I think) if nothing else works. But my saving from the player is enabled.

Any software that blocks browser plugins?

Are far as legality, I don't imagine there are any issues with trailers since they are intended as advertizing. Maybe you should charge them every time you show it to someone ;).

  3. to hide this advert.

Can you please show me how you save the trailers? I'm using version 6.3 as well on Win Xp Pro. Just to be sure we're on the same ground, can you please save the Shrek 2 trailer from here please.

It's quite frustrating because I use dialup and I have to wait quite a while for it to load. And when I close the browser or go on to another page the movie is gone from my computer and have to wait for the download again when I want to watch it again.

I hope someone from Apple Quicktime reads this.

    OK.
    I used "Donkey" size ;)

Right-click the video window and choose "Plugin Settings... "

The only box I have checked in that dialog box is "Save Movies in Disk Cache ".

Then, so the movie doesn't play until it is completely downloaded so I don't need to hear it skipping, I went to "Instant On" in the top dropdown box and made sure that was not enabled.

(In this case, my download stopped for a minute so I pressed the Play button and the download resumed.)

When it was completely downloaded, I right-clicked on the video window and chose "Save as Quicktime Movie ". It asked where I wanted to save it. Simple as that.

Does this not work for you? It was 5.29 megs, so I can see why you wouldn't want to d/l it too often!

It is a registered Pro version. Is that the difference?

    Edit:
I was wrong about the temp internet files. If it is saved, I can't find it.

My version is the free version and my Right Click > "Save as Quicktime Movie..." is greyed out. So I think this is the difference. Thanks for taking the trouble.

You and I must be using the free version of Quicktime Player. I played around with Quicktime and I've found a couple of ways to save the movies. First, I have to point out that Quicktime does not now save the movie files in the internet cache. They are now saved in the Windows temporary folder. The filename will be random letters with .tmp extension like idhg.tmp. You'll know it if it is a big file, >5megs maybe.

When you close your browser, or move on to another webpage, that file will be deleted and so you can't save it to somewhere else. I wish other programs were so efficient in deleting their temporary files. When I was using Windows 98, I found a way to prevent those files from being deleted. I press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get Windows to reboot and copy & paste the file as a .mov file. Now that I'm using XP I don't want to do that too often.

Like I said earlier, I was playing around with Quicktime and I found another way. All I have to do is to find the url for the .mov file and download it. Finding that url is rather complicated and I don't want to post it here. Below is the url to download Shrek 2 trailer "Donkey" size. Copy and paste onto your download manager.

    ://a772.g.akamai.net/5/772/51/2760e0d37953a5/1a1a1aaa2198c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177bed52b320970678e35685f860d237a20133/shrek_2-tlr_m240.mov

So, kengster, you can do the C-A-D way if you're using Win98 or you can let us know which movie trailer you'd like to download and I'll try to get the url for you. ;)

Edit: the url was too long to make it a link so have to paste the whole thing. Don't forget to put the 'http' (without quotes) in front. Also make the whole url into one line, no breaks.

So, if you keep the browser open and copy that temp file to the desktop, then rename it with a .mov file ending, it should play?

Thanks for the tip on the cache location. I sure couldn't find it in the TIF and the QT folder was the only other place I checked.

I patched that link you left but was only able to download a .mov link file that pointed to the whole movie (1.4 k, I think). The whole video didn't seem to be available from that URL. But I did discover that that URL was on the source of the page containing the QT player.

No. That's the problem. You can't do anything with the file while the browser is open. Can't copy, can't move it, can't delete it. Once the browser is closed the file is gone. In Win98, pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice, I managed to get the file not deleted and do whatever I want with it.

I've just tested that url again and it seemed alright. It should be a 5.86meg file. Sorry but it's hard to post a long one url here. Have to be very careful when patching it. Make sure no blank spaces.

BTW, Abraxas, I edited the post several times. Check when I last edited it. Maybe it was the wrong url when you viewed it.

Of course. If I had reread the thread, I would have known that!

I thought I had an edge on this one. Using FileTargets, I have been able to copy many files that the usuall shell said were in use and not copyable. But it didn't work this time. I watched that tmp file grow larger as I downloaded the QT movie, but found no way of preserving it. If I do, I'll let you guys know.

Found a trailer site called Jurassic Punk. Most of the trailers there can be saved with Right Click > Save as.

Another trailer site is Movie-List. This one points you to others sites that provide trailers to view.

I can confirm that with Quicktime 6.4 (unregistered) and Quicktime Alternative 1.22 installed, I can have the option of saving the Quicktime Movie after it's been downloaded using the browser plug-in. This can be done via Right Click (on the movie) > Save as Quicktime Movie.

I installed Quicktime Alternative after Quicktime. Towards the end of the Quicktime Alternative installation, I made sure that I allowed it to change the Quicktime settings (it is a default option in the installation anyway).

Please note that I do not know if it is possible to have Quicktime Alternative without Quicktime.

I just installed QuickTime Alternative 1.31. I used all the default options, except I did not install Media Player Classic (since XP alraedy has it).

Interestingly, WMP9 now has a codec that allows it to play .mov files, so the regular QT is not needed at all.

It would be very interesting if you can't have just the alternative. My understanding is that both the Real and Quicktime alternatives were created (or modified) to be replacements for the originals that were less intrusive and still usable.

But, I don't feel like uninstalling QT just to test it out. Maybe someone who has no QT can try the alternative for us.

Thanks for testing that, leeleeleelee. It is a better method than a forced power-down :).

    EDIT:
This from the QT Alternative site:

"QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player. As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a media player that is capable of playing QuickTime files. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR. "
