    Hi

After reading about how NS 7.1 is dead, I would like to give Mozilla 1.6 a test. I'm pretty sure I know the answers but I'd feel more comfortable receiving confirmed answers from you folks here before installing Mozilla.

    1. If I uninstall NS, then intall Mozilla, the profile remains and would then just be "converted" by Mozilla (thus saving my email, addressbooks, etc)?

    2. If I DO NOT uninstall NS, I can still install Mozilla but should create a different default profile?

I primarily use Opera 6.06 . Everyone else in my house uses NS however, and I need to create as seemless a transition as possible for the noncomputer users in the house (which is why I don't want to install Foxfire and Thunderbird). I would like to move us all to Mozilla if possible (personally, I find more and more sites with problems in Opera 6 and I do not like Opera 7).

Any other information/tips would be appreciated regarding changing to Mozilla from NS.

    Thanks
    trephin

    Hi trephin,
Not even converted, just automatically recognized by Mozilla. I'll add this for the sake of being thorough: Mozilla recommends creating a new Profile for a new Mozilla install. I don't think that's necesssary, if you've experienced no problems with the Netscape Profile. However, it's your call, and after reading the Mozilla 1.6 Release Notes (see below), you will be able to make that decision with a little more knowledge under your belt.
Definitely create a unique Profile for Mozilla. You can either create a new Profile before installing Mozilla, or you can move the Netscape Profile out of the Profiles folder and into a temporary folder until after Mozilla is installed. Either way avoids the conflict of sharing the Profile.
You seem to be on top of it, and I would urge you to read the Mozilla 1.6 Release Notes before you install. There is a lot of good information contained in those Notes. The "Before You Install" section will most likely answer most of your questions.

You can run both Netscape and Mozilla with no conflicts. If you decide to uninstall Netscape, you must be sure to also delete its GRE folder, located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408
    and the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape Folder.

Some ATI video drivers are not compatible with Mozilla and may lead to crashes. JGB just posted that he had problems installing Mozilla 1.6, and found that his ATI driver was the problem. He suggested installing an updated ATI driver before installing Mozilla. Those drivers can be downloaded here, if this affects your system:
    http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html

Feel free to post back with any further questions. I think you will thoroughly enjoy your Mozilla experience, and will find it to be an extremely stable browser, and mail program.

    Hi Ramona

    Thanks again for your help

I have a couple more questions though...

in my netscape folder, I have [components] and [plugins] folders ... if I want to use my plugins with Mozilla, do I just copy these two folders someplace? where?

second, does mozilla suffer from the same profile corruption issues as NS? I suppose it would be prudent to continue to backup the profiles folder.

lastly, i had followed the tips for the resource leak for NS 7.1 and was wondering if I should delete the browser.cache.memory.capacity entry? Have you kept the set capacity setting for mozilla or are you using the default settings (also, can you point me to how to delete the entry or do I just 'reset' it through the right click menu?)

    thanks

    Hi trephin,
Don't copy the components folder, as Mozilla will install its own component folder.

The plugins folder should be copied to a temporary folder. Once Mozilla is installed, then move the Plugins folder back to the C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla folder.
I've never had a problem using the same plugins folder. You might find that you have to reinstall a plugin. I seem to recall that I had to reinstall Crescendo, which is my embedded midi player. See this site for detailed information about plugins: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/
Let us suffice to say that that it would be prudent to make frequent backups of the Profiles folder.
That setting is unnecessary in Mozilla 1.6, and in fact I have a brief guideline for returning that setting back to default:

Let me know if you have further questions.
