I have heard many of the "computer pros" around here fixing problems with their supposed solution of wiping the hard drive. I believe it is their easy way out and keeps the customer coming back needlessly. Also, if they do wipe the hard drive they don't bother telling the customer who may have pics, music, etc on there.

That's one reason I got into fixing and repairing computers for friends and family because I don't want to see them done wrong.

I love this support site, getting real answers from knowlegable people.

We are still having so much trouble with trying to get my sisters computer back up an running since the "computer expert" wipped everything out of it. Now it is saying that she has broadband, which she doesnot have.. It also says it can't locate the modem which is----- US Robotics 56K Voice Host Int The computer guy says that it is not a US Robotics modem but that is what is on the modem.. We have copied things from Drivers Guide an can't get anything to work...What do you think we are doing wrong????

:( I just went to the site you told me about an downloaded the info. I copied to a disk what was called Disk 1 so I am hoping this is what they need.. I am going nuts trying to figure this out an reading up on all these modems for them. Will let you know about it. The other night he gave me this to look up for him----US Robotics 56K Voice Host Int. I have that in my favorites for him to look at when he comes down again. Again, thanks so much for all the help an for being so patient with me and all my questions.

Okay Pete, it didn't work. When I download the file, there was like 10 I do believe, so I copied the one called Disk 1. Do you have any idea which folder I should be copying to a disk??? They are wondering if maybe there modem has possibly just gone bad an if so, would any modem work in their moniter?? I told my sister that I won't give up on this till we have her up an running again... Thanks Pete, Have a great nite!!

I’ve had a look at that driver zip file for the 3095 "“ USR must be joking "“ there is no way that the unzipped files will fit onto a floppy disk!

    So do this "¦..

Extract the files to a folder on your hard drive "“ you’ve done that I think.

Copy ALL 17 files to a CD "“ can you do this? Don’t put them into a folder on the CD, just copy them straight across.

On your sister’s computer go to Device Manager and remove the modem "“ if present.

Assuming the modem was in Device Manager ...

    Reboot

Windows should find New Hardware and start the Wizard

Insert the CD into the drive and point the Wizard to the files, e.g. D: where D is the CD drive "“ substitute the correct drive letter if not D.

Hopefully Windows will find the drivers and install.

Assuming the modem was not in Device Manager "¦

Control Panel > Add Hardware "“ the Add Hardware Wizard starts > "˜Yes I have already installed the hardware > next

A list of hardware on the m/c is presented "“ if the modem is not listed (probably not) scroll to the bottom of the list and highlight "˜Add a new Hardware Device’ > next

‘Install the Hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) > next

On the list presented highlight Modems > next

Select "˜Don’t detect my modem "¦â€¦.’ > next

On the list presented select 56k modem and hit "˜Have Disk’.

In the "˜Install from Disk’ dialogue box enter the location of the files - e.g. D: where D is the CD drive "“ substitute the correct drive letter if not D.

    And take it from there.

If the modem still fails to install "“ very possible, I suggest a cheap $10 (?) modem, but before you buy you will need to open the case and check if the existing modem is in an ISA slot or a PCI slot. ISA is possible if the computer is some years old, but if there are PCI slots available that is the one to go for "“ doubt you will get an ISA modem anyway. The old modem must be removed.

Keep at it - we will not be beaten by a box full of chips :D

I just want to thank everyone for all their help an advice on trying to figure out my sisters computer... After everything we tried, with all of your help, she took it back to the guy who wipped everything out of it and for another $10.00, he put another modem in it... Now, she has another ISP an she keeps getting kicked off. It will start counting down then in the blink of an eye, she is gone.. She is going to call them though...
Pete, a HUGE thank you to you for taking the time to locate everything that you did for us.. We tried everything you suggested so it must have been a bad modem. But, I do have a question for you about my own computer..I turned it on one day to get a black screen. The same guy who worked on my sisters said bad hard drive, $100.00 to fix that.. My computer is a year old, how could a hard drive go bad that quick???
Thanks again to all you wonderful people!!;)

Take the computer to someone else, this guy sounds like a con artist. If someone different say's the same then so be it, but it sounds to me as if he is out to get as much money as he can whatever way he can.

Was this a one off or is it an ongoing situation?

Hard drives can 'pop' at any time, but are generally pretty reliable, but no excuse for not backing up your personal data to an external source - CD, etc :)

That guy is DEFINITELY ripping you off!

16 new times roman About your modem driver> first, you should open your case and check to make sure the modem card is well seated (plugged in to your riser card)if it is not, making sure the computer is turned off and unplugged, gently but firmly plug it in to the slot. Then turn your computer back on. Next> go to the CONTROL PANEL and open up SYSTEM. Click the HARDWARE tab> Open the DEVICE MANAGER. Here you will see a list of all of the hardware on your system. Click the + next to MODEMS. When it collapses, right-click on the modem that dropped down...scroll down to UNINSTALL. Click> OK. Cloose your device manager and all open pages and RESTART your computer. When it starts back up, XP should find and install the modem driver for you AUTOMATICALLY! I hope this works. If it does not, the problem is in your hardware.

Well, here I am again...back to bother all of you!!!!:D I have yet to figure out my tower to see if the hard drive has gone bad, not had the time or cash to take it to someone else...Eventually I will though. Is there not some way to check it at home so that I know something maybe???
Well, again my sister is having some XP problems. All was going well till the other day with it, now the XP sign-on screen comes on where you click on a name to sign on. Well, upon doing that, she is asked for her password, when she types it in, a little box appears asking if she has forgotten her password an it will not let her go any further than this. She is thinking the problem is the fact that the XP was not activated within the 30 days. I have searched on here for a phone number for her to call to activate it, no luck.. Any one have any answers to this problem???
Again, thanks so much for all the help...
