In the Windows Components of Win XP Home there are entries that are installed and if not useful to me I'd like to get them out. COM+ and WMI. I don't understand what they are even after reading the description. I have Cable Internet and am Host on a Crossover Network.

Would someone advise me on this please. If it's not necessary I'd like to remove them.

    What started this thought?

COM+ removal (and especially if it also dings COM - not really sure) will probably cause some applications to stop working, forever.

WMI - you can maybe safely get rid of it. If you do, chances are some of the suggestions you'd get if you posed a network problem question wouldn't work. Not sure what else.

Let me say this about that - there is no way I'd feel safe removing either from my PCs. Absolutely not COM+.

You may find folks who'll say different about this and that you can safely get rid of them. If one of those people isn't named Bursley, I'd ignore him/her. If he says OK, then you can but I still wouldn't.

Newt, you have me gun-shy already and I've just posted the Post! I have no good explanation as "why" just wanted to clean up as much as I could and ran across these, read the explanation, didn't understand it, so thought I inquire. Already wish I had not! So I just set tight and wait until you go fishing again to post the next question.:p

Mudd - my reply was designed to scare the wadding out of you and hopefully ensure you would leave COM+ and WMI strictly alone.

Partly done for your benefit but mostly for mine since I no way wanted to try to work thru the aftermath of that.

I'm going to be away at a conference the first full week in April and hadn't planned to take along a laptop to stay current on the forum. Guess I better take it with me now though. :D :D

    Go to Administrative Tools\Services

WMI should be set to Automatic and Started.
WMI Driver Extensions can be set to Stopped and Manual.
    (This will cause no problems)

COM & Event System can be set to Manual, but likely will be Started at every boot, this is OK.
COM & System Application can be set to Stopped and Manual and likely is not needed. Go to:

    "C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications "

On your system, see if you have any installed "COM+" Applications. If not, you can probably disable this service with no side effects (besides the Event Log complaining upon reboots). But better to set it at Manual in any case.

FYI - The Services Tool Windows gives a halfway decent description of each service. Read the descriptions of WMI and COM.

It's almost like you are looking at my PC! Things are set as you say they should be.

There are no applications in the ComPlus Application Folder, just a blank. So will just leave it.

Thanks, alway eager to explore something new.
