We're advised to delete suspicious e-mail without opening it. Exactly what is OPENING? I have to click on it to delete it. This highlights the line and displays the message. Is that OPEN? Is there a way to delete it without clicking?

A very good question, Kingman. I've wondered the same thing myself for a long time. I know better than to open any attachments accompanying the message, but that still leaves us with your question. I'll be watching to see what others say.

If you are using OE turn off the preview window - you will then need to double click a message to open it in its own window, but just a single click to highlight it and then hit Delete.

To turn off the Preview Pane in Outlook Express:
Tools> Options> Read> untick "auto download messages in preview pane

    AND
View> Layout Untick "Show Preview Pane" Both are enabled by default in XP.

All right, that's fine if I use OE. But I use Netscape 7.1. Is there a way to get the same result with NS?

You can also close the Message pane by clicking on the horizontal "Grippy ", between the Header Pane and the Message Pane
    OR
In Mail & Newsgroups, click on View | Show/Hide
    Disable: Message Pane
    OR
Hold down the Shift Key, highlight the message, and click on the Delete button.

Once the message is deleted, then Compact your folders to ensure that it is also removed from the HD.

Even if the message has no dangerous attachment, just viewing it can confirm to the sender that your email address is a valid one.

I shut off internet access temporarily with my external (cable) modem to stop that feature. Zone Alarm has a similar function. Any message that tries to call out gets deleted (after I read it if I want).

An advantage to doing this is I get no spam. None. On the other hand, I don't get to see the dancing flowers and other Cr*p sent by certain friends.

If you look on the lower right of the mail screen, above the system tray clock.. notice a icon.... like two pipes joined with a center coupler. Click on it, and the two separate. This puts you in a "off line" mode and allows no commnication with the net. It will ask if you would like to download all your messages before it goes offline. Once done reviewing email, a click on the same icon reconnects your link to your ISP / internet.

I waited until I got an unwanted e-mail before I tried any of the posted suggestions. The one that seemed the simplest to me was to right-click on the listed message and then click Delete in the drop-down menu. That got rid of it there, then I opened Trash, opened File, clicked on Empty Trash, and that was that. Job done. Quick and easy.

Before, I was always opening the message to see if it really was spam and then deleted it. Opening it first always seemed risky to me. Now that I know how to do it, I can more safely dump the junk while it's a bit less likely to do harm.

    Thanks for the suggestions, everybody.

How can just viewing a message confirm that your address is active? The only way this can be done is if the email is sent with the return receipt feature, and even then you must click on the thing saying you read it.

I'm under the impression that allowing HTML messages to automatically download embedded pictures and what-not can also leak the email address. Maybe I'm wrong:confused:

    samson,

I'll bet you are thinking about when you are cautioned about responding to the spammer, and the "remove" instructions in spam email. Following the "remove" instructions in any spam mail confirms that your email address is valid, and active.

    In addition to Ramona's post:

I beleive that the ISP is the determining factor as to if an account is VALID... It exists or it does not......

Any ACTION by you would indicate if it is ACTIVE.....

Ramona - no, that one I know about.

An example: I sometimes get messages from a (legitimate) company who uses ipost.com to contact their customers and "track the results ". These messages immediately try to contact ipost.com, not to download anything but just to verify that I received the message. Maybe it's all anonymous ;) but I doubt it.

I just ran across this on http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,115278,00.asp

It's about an upcoming XP service pack.

"Also, Outlook Express will no longer download graphics and other external content in HTML by default, as these can be used to validate e-mail addresses. "
