Is it possible to have 2 (or more) bookmark files and easily switch between them in the browser?

Currently I have 2 files with different names and copy either one to bookmark.htm BEFORE I bring up the browser. Then I have to remember to copy it back out to its file when I exit if it changes. It's a pain and I often forget, or can't clean up on exit.

I remember NS 4 (or earlier) having a "select Bookmarks" in the files section.

This is just another in the long list of usefull things deleted on various upgrades, with useless things replacing them (like Download Manager).

I'm in the process of changing to a new PC. The old one runs NS 7.1 under WIN 98. The new beast runs WIN-XP-Home.

Ramona advised me to switch to Mozilla on the new one and told me how to transfer my files and profiles.

So any solution will probably be done to the Mozilla version.

Thank you for the information re: OS and browser.

To be honest, I do not understand exactly what you are trying to do......

Shareing bookmarks between profiles is probably what you are looking for, but without knowing what reseults you expect any other suggestions are of little value.

I use Mozilla 1.6. I have set up 2 Mozilla profiles. Why? Because I need two sets of bookmarks. To change between them I just switch profiles. And, if for any reason I need to access the bookmarks in the other profile, I have a bookmark to the bookmark.htm of the other profile.

    Not too confusing I hope.

    Hi JGB,

If you want to share Bookmarks between Profiles, add this script to your prefs.js file:
    user_pref( "browser.bookmarks.file ", "C:\\Bookmarks\\bookmarks.html ");

The above is assuming that you placed your bookmarks.html file in a newly created "Bookmarks" folder on the root directory. I'm using my script as an example. This allows me to share the same Bookmarks between two versions of Netscape, and two versions of Mozilla.

    To edit the prefs.js file:
    Close Netscape & Quick Launch
    Back up the prefs.js file

    Open Notepad
    File | Open
    Navigate to your *.slt folder
    Open the prefs.js file
    Add the above script
    File | Save
    Close Notepad

    Thanks, both; but....

Lee; I pointed to my 2nd bookmark file, and up it came. I then bookmarked it in my default bookmarks. I can access sites, but I cannot edit any prefs, nor can I add or delete a bookmark in that 2nd file this way.
You mentioned "switch profiles ", how do I do this?
Please be a bit more detailed, as others may want to do the same and are not up to the speed you (and to a lesser extent; I) are.

Ramona; I understand editing prefs.js to point to a different bookmark file, for other profiles to share, but in my case I want to switch between 2 different bookmark files in the same profile.

    JGB,

To switch Profiles: Tools | Switch Profiles

You can also Import the other set of Bookmarks you wish to use, and although it will not create two separate Bookmark files, the second set of Bookmarks will be added to the end of the current Bookmarks list.

There is a nice Bookmarks section in the Help Contents.

    From Netscape 7.1 "Help ":
The imported bookmark file is treated as a group of new bookmarks and added to the bottom of your bookmarks list. If you have designated a new bookmark folder, the imported bookmarks are added to that folder.

Note: Importing a bookmark file imports the bookmarks and folders from that file. It does not create two bookmark files.

Neither will it overwrite the existing set of Bookmarks. I just tried importing my FireFox Bookmarks to my Mozilla 1.6 Bookmarks, and the Firefox Bookmarks were added to the Mozilla 1.6 Bookmark list.

This way enables you to add, delete, and manage/edit Bookmarks in both Folders...

Ramona mentioned how to switch profile above.

But, let us now assume you only have one profile. Probably named default. We need to create a new profile and name it, say, Fun. Steps below quote from Mozilla Help:
Now we need to rename the Default profile to, say, Work.
When you open up the browser in either profile, whatever changes you make to the preferences or bookmarks will not affect the other profile.

So, when you are finished with Work and want to go on to Fun, you just click Tools > Switch Profile... The Work browser will close and the Fun browser will open.

    Hope this is clearer. ;)

    Thank you Lee & Ramona.

Part of my confusion is that I now realize you guys are talking Mozilla, and my PC is running NS 7.1. There is no "profile" switch in NS 7.1 (that I can find) and I had created (what seemed to be) a second profile some time back by simply adding a second e-mail profile for my wife, but from within NS. I see now that it is not a true full profile, just a second e-mail account.

I will be going to Mozilla on my new PC within a few days now. Since I cannot run the old PC on the internet concurrent with the new PC, and I must do some stuff on the old PC before I can make the final transition, I am not able to try your solutions as soon as I read them. I will let you know when I do.

    Thanks again.

    lee,

What is the purpose of renaming the current Profile? Actually, I don't believe that is necessary.

If you did rename the Profile, there are other steps to take:

    - You would have to edit the prefs.js file to reflect the Profile name change.
(Not really necessary, when you change the name in Profile Manager.
This is an additional step that I take due to an A Type personality)

    - Change the Profile name if you have added the -p profilename switch to the Desktop Icon.

    - Delete the registry.dat file to point Mozilla to the correct Profile, as it would still be looking for the current Profile name.
(Another one of those A Type urges)

I should explain further, that the Program will continue to point to the old Profile data, even though the Profile name has been changed, using the Profile Manager.

You're absolutely right. The current profile name can remain as Default. My mistake. Sorry. :p

    JGB,

The Switch Profile option is available in Netscape 7.1, but only if you don't have NIM installed, and I did forget that. Sorry!

    Ramona,

"NIM" ?????? What is it? Do I need it? Can I get rid of it?
    I did just a standard install when I upgraded 4.x to 7.1
I tried 6 a long ways back but it was a dog in the desert, so I went back to 4.

    JGB,

NIM is your Netscape Instant Messaging. You would have to uninstall Netscape, and then reinstall with SillyDog701 Streamline Version. With a "Custom" install, you can opt out of Instant Messaging. Note: You will not be able to access Netscape Webmail via the Mail & Newsgroups component without NIM. However, you can always access Netscape Webmail through the web portal.

If you do decide to uninstall Netscape:
Reboot your PC after the uninstall
Ensure that you also delete the GRE folder before reinstalling. Otherwise you may have a problem starting Netscape. The folder is located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE.

The uninstall/reinstall will have no effect on your Profile. It will remain intact.

Thanks, just was curious. I plan to do no changes to my Netscape as I am switching over to Mozilla on the new PC, any day now.
