I am using windows 98 2nd edition but know less than nothing about computers.

Can you tell me how to play CD's.... for games or whatever, I insert the CD disk into the computer but nothing happens.

    Can anyone tell me why?

    Thanks

To make the CD run automatically when inserted, double click My Computer>double click Control Panel>double click System>click the Device Manager tab>double click on the CD drive under Computer>click the Settings tab and click on the box next to "Auto insert notification" to check mark it.

    Thank you RichC

Tried suggestions: Followed each step carefully and under computer it said CD Rom.

I clicked that and got NEC CD-ROM drive:251. This was listed 4 times with different "current assignment D, E, F, G ". I clicked each one and checked "Auto insert notification ".

Sorry but nothing happened when I inserted a disk. I tried several different disk and still nothing.

Did I follow you instructions properly?

Thanks again for you quick response

Your CD-ROM drive should be shown only once in Device Manager - not 4 times!

I suggest you remove all instances of the NEC drive (right click on drive in Device Manager > Remove) - reboot and let Windows find it again.

Check in Device Manager that there is only one instance of the drive - should be assigned drive letter D - assuming you have single, unpartitioned hard drive C.

Then follow RichC's post - I think Windows may be confused by the duplicate entries.

but know less than nothing about computers

Really recommend finding a friend, neighbor computer smart. Most games need to be installed prior to playing. Are they compatiable with Win98? Music Cds, store bought/burnt ones from friends?

What type of disk are you trying?

    Pete

Tried to delete the NEC files but when I restarted the computer they were still there. Even though when I clicked "remove" it did appear as though they had done just that.

Aleekat I have tried many disks. Yes they are store bought and compatible with windows 98. In fact, I have used them before.

Previous to taking my computer to a repair shot (about a month ago) to have windows 98 second edition reinstalled, they worked just fine. So I don't know if there is something I have to do to fix it.

I will have a friend take a look if all else fails.

    Thanks, your replies are appreciated.

Well, if it worked prior to taking it to the repair shop, and now it doesn't. They should fix it free. Unless you are not happy with their work.

Tried to delete the NEC files but when I restarted the computer they were still there.

    All four items again?

I would delete the 4 listings, turn off the computer. Remove the power plug and ide cable from the CD Rom.

Restart the computer and let Windows load. Let it sit a min then turn off the computer.

Re-attach the power plug and ide rcable to the CD Rom and start the computer again.

This "may" work. I had the same problem a while back and it was the only way of getting rid of the extra listings (till I did my yearly format)
