I thought this 390 kb download would reduce the size but / and improve the quality of my .jpg images.
I have looked at it but cannot fathom what it is supposed to do.
Has anyone got it and can enlighten me ?
What is a codec anyway ? Not in Merriam Webster !
As far as I remember it is a music term for the last stanza of a
work. Nothing on the Webpage helped me understand,
    Thanks for any help
    regards

A codec is a series of algorythms that take input, and produce a different output, depending on the source, application, and product.
Now for what it really does...
Take an application that uses graphics...Irfanview for example.
Import a picture, manipulate it some way, then save it. The result is different than the original, and quite possibly in many different ways. If you import a .bmp and save as a .jpg, it's going to be much smaller filesize, because the .jpg codec has done some fancy background work to the image.
The same applies to mpeg, avi, mov, wmv, mp3, wav, etc., just about every type of media one can digitize for use on a computer.
The m-jpg codec is just one of many, competing to be the (insert adjective here) kid on the block.
If you're not happy with your current jpeg filesize, I suggest you manipulate the codec...that is, change compression when saving.
"the last stanza of a work ", is a CODA, not a codec ;)
I also suggest you read further what an "m-jpeg" codec does, versus a "jpeg ". You are not going to improve quality. There's only so much any codec can do, and if an image is degraded, opening it in a program, and resaving it using a different codec (file format), is NOT going to improve it's quality. There are some graphic's programs that do have an extensive library of filters, and some of these can give the illusion of better quality, by increasing contrast, edge enhancement, etc.

Hi Reboot and thanks for the very useful info.
I will experiment and keep in touch with you and the board.
You are right with "codec" and "coda" but not with
    "algorythms" (algorithms) :)
    best regards

    Hi All,

    Uninstalled it ...

+ point = *40 % smaller files, no lack of quality
    - point = .jp2 extension unknown to most graphics
programs I have and want to continue using.

    regards
