my friend has a hp pavilion 8210 (AP) n he did a clean install W98SE instead of using the hp recovery cd.
he managed to get all the driver from the hp web-site but when he boot-up,he received a message "THE SOUND BLASTER AUDIOPCI 64V DRIVER CANNOT LOAD MIDI WAVESET.MIDI PLAYBACK HAS BEEN DISABLED ".
this message appeared everytime he boot-up his pc n only when he click "OK ",the pc then con't the boot-up othewise it just "wait ".

If Shadowhawks suggestion doesn't help try this. In the multimedia applet in the control panel click on devices. Click the plus next to midi devices and instruments. Now click once on first device in the tree (no need to click on the plus next to it) and then click properties. Tick the line that says use midi features on this device. Click ok and then do this for rest of the devices listed.

I also have an HP Pavilion...this was a problem with HP...there is a fix for it on the HP Customer Care website and it was quite simple. I'm sorry that I don't remember the location of the fix as it was on a different computer but you should be able to find it by searching on the site as that is how I found it...Good Luck

HP Email and also instant support *ALWAYS* have one solution to every problem and that is recovery...it is nonsense. I will try to set up that other computer and find the URL for you.I have never gotten any other answer than recovery from HP eMail support and I think that is a very drastic solution for every little problem. Please bear with me and I will try to find it for you later today>>>

I think you should be able to replace the synthesizer without the second disk...I would try it. When you don't have a CD the files should be in Windows/Options/Cabs...Give it a try...

I hope I am right...maybe someone who knows more will correct me otherwise...
