This seems a very basic question but I cannot sort out how to solve it myself

I have 14GB hard disk which is a basic disk partitioned into C: 5 GB and F: 9GB. F: has 67% free space
The system has a dual boot b/w W98 and W2000 with the OS for both on C:

Can I modify these partitions, without losing the data on them.
    If so how?
I would like to install XP into a new partition get it running and then get rid of the old OS

    Thanks

u can only change your particion with ,for exemple, partion magic. windows disk managment doesn't allow u to do what u want.

But if u want to install winxp or if u want to continue with dual boot, the best pratice is to have a primary particion (C: ) with 7 to 10 mgb and then two more primary particions (d: and e: ) each for one OS. this way the boot files from both OS will be installed in the C: (this is done automaticly by the OS u just need to install the OS in D: or E: ) and later if u want to delete an OS u can do so without damaging the other. U can also make anoher partition (Extended) for keeping non OS stuff.

Format the C: with fat32 so u can still work with win98.
If u want u can format the particion with win2000 or XP with NTFS.

PS : Before doing this u should take some time to understand the diferences between Primary and Extended Partions, and if u want u can also search for Dynamic Disk, witch is only possible in windows 2000,2003 and XP. WIN98 doesn't detect dynamic disk.
U don't need Dynamic Disks to do what u want.

And sorry if wasn't to clear on the subject.

Thanks for your feedback. I purchased Partition Magic and I am setting up the disk as you have suggested
