Hi,,,,,I have AVG, Spybot, Adware and Easy Cleaner on my system...Up to about a week ago I could update the definitions on these programs...
However, now when I try to Update the info on all the programs I get the mesage that the program either had an error or the program could not recognize the connection I already had to the Internet and could I please connect to the Internet to access the site...
    Something is not right......
I have uninstalled all the programs and reinstalled them but I get the same uncooperative situation just the same when trying to obtain any upgrades.
    Any ideas?????

Possibly blocked by a CoolWebSearch hijack or similar. See if you can access the CWShredder link in my signature then download and run it. Try doing an online virus scan too.

Hi Dave...I tried to do the online scanner you provided and got the message that it error in loading and questioned if I had at leastExplorer 4.0. The CD Shredder said I had no infections of CoolWeb. Does it matter if they are done in Safe Mode or regular?

Running CWShredder within windows is the correct way. Try some of the scanners listed here by jmatt.

    Hi Dave,
everytime I try to scan with the Etrust online scanner you send me to I get the following message in Red lettering 'Control failed to load, are you using Explorer 4.0 or better?
CWShredder shows a clean system, no infections and not present are the messages I get.
Curious...How do I check the condition of my Internet Exeplorer 6.0??? Seems it is not working well enough to be easily recognized by the programs....

Did you happen to use any of the Spybot's Immunize features? They block ActiveX controls from being downloaded, and Etrust is trying to install one.
Or disable any of IE's Activex settings?
Internet Options. Security tab, click on Custom Level to check this.
    Signed ActiveX Prompt
    Unsigned Activex Disable
Initialize and Script ActiveX Controls not marked as Safe Disable
Run ActiveX controls and Plugins Enable
    Script ActiveX controls Enable

Have you recently uninstalled any programs ?
I'm thinking of zone alarm. ?

this is a real lonnngg shot >
try or copy paste this into IE's addressbar then hit go copy paste the results back here
    javascript:navigator.userAgent

    then maybe this one to
    javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

So AVG, Spybot, Adaware and Easy Cleaner
give us details of what each say's when updating

I'm afraid to tell you avg has been this way for alot of us
come back with an error a connect to the internet cannot be established.. its just that the servers are overloaded
    Problems Updating AVG, free version

Mark62 Spybot's Immunize features has nothing to do with safe active x not loading.

I have not used the immunize feature of Spybot because I don't understand it enough so that is not the cause.....
Never had Zone Alarm..........I did uninstall a program my wife put on the computer called MSN Hotmail shortcut and Turbo Tax Premeire...After she loaded these 2 programs on my machine the machine started acting sluggish so I eliminated them.....I uninstalled the Turbo Tax with the Add/Remove in Control Panel......the MSN thing I could not find in the programs so I dumped it in the Trash bin and deleted it......

I got as far as being able to rename the url to url.iniold but can't find notepad in this XP setup to copy and paste to and drag and drop into the avg6 folder......

Doing the Active X thing is a bit cinfusing to me.....I am not bright enough to grasp that.........I had a tough enough time with troubleshooting Windows 98SE....XP seems different and more complicated...
I am one of those people who mostly uses the other side of the brain for creating,,,but have great difficulty with the concept and comprehension of word math.....I can follow instructions but they have to be very specific,,,,unless it is something I have done before

Notepad within XP is at Start>All Programs>Accessories.

    To make checking ActiveX settings clearer, open Internet explorer, click Tools from the top of window, then Internet Options. On the Security tab click Custom Settings. In the list, adjust these settings accordingly;

    Signed ActiveX- Prompt
    Unsigned Activex- Disable
Initialize and Script ActiveX Controls not marked as Safe- Disable
Run ActiveX controls and Plugins- Enable
    Script ActiveX controls- Enable

    Hope this helps.

Did you paste either one of these into your browsers address bar as Lonny suggested? What were the results?

    java script:navigator.userAgent
    java script:navigator.appMinorVersion

Were you able to run any of the other online scans?
