    Hi,
I have Windows/Me and a few days ago, as I was getting and deleting emails, my Inbox showed one email but nothing was in the preview pane. I closed out and it remained when I returned. I re-booted and it was still there when I returned. I did a little home work on the matter and went to start, search, files and folders, typed in "Inbox.dbx" and could not figure out what to delete. Since it was difficult to find out what to delete and not delete, I took a chance and deleted 4 listings I had under Profiles. The problem continues. I am able to receive emails but the number 1 still sits beside my email inbox indicating I have a message. Any suggestions ??? (I use Outlook Express 6)...

Do you also use MSN Messenger? When I sign into it, unread mail count gets updated. If I don't sign in, it will continue to show new email even when there isn't.

    Hi,
Yes I do have MSN messenger but I do not use it for sending or receiving emails, just for Instant Messenging. I have had this computer almost three years and this is the first time this has happened. I think what happened is something got hung up and I can't free it. Because I was deleting some of the emails too fast, so between going from inbox to delete I moved too fast. I keep my computer in pretty good health, etc, etc. Usually from what I have researched, that when something happens to the Inbox, it freezes up other emails and I think it's diificult to receive others but I'm just the opposite. I have no emails hung up and I still get them but for some reason I can not free up that indication that there is one in the Inbox...

If you're sure there are no emails you want to keep, go to inbox.dbx, right click it and delete it.

Next time you open OE a new (empty) one will be created.

    Howdy,
In the Inbox.dbx files there are 5 ApplicationData/Identities and 3 Profiles in the name of another person in my house. The other day there was 4 Profiles in my name to which I deleted. The problem or maybe the question I have is "What gets and what does not get deleted" ??? I think I read something that said not to delete anything with todays date on it ? Or did I mis-understand something. When the answer to that question is available then I guess I can proceed with your suggestion...

Move the folders for your username to make them easier to get at, viz :

Create a folder in the root folder (C:\), call it say, My Mail. Go to OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance Tab and click on Store Folder and browse/change it to point to the new folder (My Mail). Close OE, go to explorer and navigate to C:\My Mail and right click and delete inbox.dbx. Next time you open OE you will have an empty inbox.dbx.

    Good luck

Open My Computer, open C:, right click blank space and choose NEW>folder.

Also, in OE click view>current view and make sure show all messages is ticked. It's probably not the problem here but you never know.

    Master Green,

I was not suggesting that you use Messenger for email, but that when you log in to messenger, it updates unread mail in the hotmail account that it's tied to, and if that account is bound to OE, it would reflect email there as well. Logging on to messenger and accessing the email inbox from there will update unread mail count. May not be the problem here though. Just thought I would explain myself.

    Attn: noahdfear
In regards to your messenger messages, I understood it (both of your posts messages). I wanted to make sure you knew my use of it. Some people have more than one email account. As usual thanks for the clarification anyways. Your other suggestion as for the email folder, I will try that later and report back as soon as that mission is complete...Thanks there also for your guideance.

    Attn: Zander
I double checked your suggestion and as is well there. Thanks

P.S... Yesterday, for what it was worth I uninstalled and re-installed Outlook Express 6 and the problem remained. I now will follow the post of noahdfear and post back later...

    Update:
I did the following steps (correct me please if I did them wrong):
    (1) I went to my computer, clicked on C drive, and created the
new folder, and named it "my mail "
    (2) Followed that up with going to OE, tools, options, then
    maintenance and store folder.
    (3) Clicked on change, a menu appeared, scrolled to the folder
    "my mail" and clicked ok.
    (4) Then went to start, search, files & folders and typed in
"my mail ", when it was found, I deleted it.
    (5) I then exited, re-booted and when I returned to OE to check
and see if the problem was a "no-more" much to my suprise
    it was still there.
If I did the above steps correctly, I guess it's onto plan B. If not please advise and I will try again with the corrections...Thanks

You deleted the folder that you just created. Do it again. After changing storage location, close OE, then open the new folder. There should be an inbox.dbx file. Delete that, then open OE again

    Attn: noahdfear,
I did as you said (atleast I hope) and as son as I created the new storage location, the 1 beside my email inbox disappeared. I still followed up with the rest of the procedure and all is well now. The question I have is, do I leave the new storage location as My Mail because thats what it still says ?

Glad it worked for you. Yeah, I see no problem with leaving it as is. At least you know where to find it when you want. :)

    Update...

I did correct the problem per the instructions provided and all was well for atleast 2 weeks, and the same problem re-occurred. The new folder for the email is still in place but for some unknown reason that number one re-appeared again next to Inbox...
