    Hi all,

I'd best hurry up and type this before I lose the connection.

Cannot find server and cannot up/download emails once this infernal error commences.

    XP Home and IE6/OE6.

Could be 20 or 40 minutes or 2 hours of online when all of a sudden I can't make contact using OE or IE even though I am still connected with dial up 56K connected at 48Kbps.

If you know how to run ping or tracert commands, I would do this to a known good site like www.cnn.com the next time it happens. If pings/tracerts work out, then its IE/OE, if not. I would put the blame on your ISP. Most ISPs will always blame your computer, and most phone companies will blame the ISP.

    aleekat,

I,m short on savvy re- your suggestion but I have done a Repair job on XP and will see how that goes.

In the meantime you might like to post info on pinging for myself and others who pass this way.

    Thanks

    tracert

Open a command prompt and type tracert www.windowsbbs.com (or any www) and hit enter. You will get results in ms (milliseconds) over 30 hops. Lower numbers means good transmission time. My low just now was 10ms and high was 48ms. That's on cable connection, and if all were under 30, I'd be thrilled.

    noahdfear,

Thanks for that info I'll make a note of it.

3 rows of ms 186 being the lowest and 1795 the highest...not sure how to read the columns.

It timed out at 15 so the remainder 15 didn't get a reading..that should say something I guess.

Normally I would expect to see those times in the 200 to 500 range, but I just noticed you are in Australia and if tracing to this BBS, location could affect those numbers. Try tracing to a location close to you, such as your ISP. It may help to clear TIFs, make sure your system is free of spyware and stop running processes while testing, to verify that none of those things are taking away from your modem's performance, which can happen with an internal modem. If those numbers remain high, and requests continue to time out, I would think there is a problem with the modem or the phone lines, but could also just be high traffic on the server, which you could do nothing about, except complain to your ISP.
