Disk Cleanup 'hangs' on "Calculating... Scanning: Compress Old Files"

The past two days I have tried to run disk cleanup, and both days the same thing has happened. I get to the stage where it says "Calculating... Scanning: Compress Old Files ". Normally this would take about 10-15 seconds, where as now it takes 7-9 minutes. After that period of time I just quit it and I knew something is wrong. Does anyone happen to know how to fix this? I have tried to cleanup both ways, through the System tools and through the properties of the disk. Please post anything that you think may fix this.
