I have my external HD via USB and when I turn it on (it's not always on) I get a pop up error message to the effect of:

A USB Hi Speed USB device is plugged into a non high speed hub.

There are no hi speed usb host controllers installed on this computer.

    Then another window:

    2 hubs

    USB Roothub (2 ports)
    >USB Mass storage device
    >unused port

Will this ***** things up if I continue to use it this way or must I install something?

Never thought much of this message as I don't use the HD for much and don't always have the thing on, but I just got the message again, so thought I'd ask! :p

    Thanks!! :D

The original USB - USB 1 has been superseded by USB 2 which is faster, but backwards compatible with USB 1. That is a USB 1 device will function correctly when plugged into a USB 2 port, but the data transfer rate will be that of USB 1, not USB 2.

Might have been a good idea to have read your post more carefully :(

    Rewrite ....

A USB 2 device (Hi Speed) will work when plugged into a USB 1 ('low' speed) port, but the data transfer rate will be at 'low' speed and not the high speed that the device is capable of.

    LOL!! ;)

I see, so it won't ruin anything, just function at a lower speed? It's just used as storage/backup, I don't run apps or anything from it...

    It will be okay, then?

    :D

    Thank you!!!
