There seems to be a difference of opinion on the Board - does it really matter?

I have always suggested Spybot before Ad-Aware - any thoughts?

And I always ran Ad-Aware before Spybot. No reasoning for it. Just did.

    My 2¢
Since the only purpose in running both is to see if the second picks up anything the first did not, I would not think the order makes any difference.

I would look at it that way too. A recent post by Newt suggested to the poster to run Ad-aware first, but I have always followed Mike Flynn's strong advice here. Just wondered if there were any good reasons to run one before the other.

I've always followed that same "STRONG" advice also, and just figured Mike had experiences to warrant doing so. Someone's gotta get that guy back to the boards! :)

Ha! Easier said than done. Mike has found his lady, and we can't compete with that! It would take a powerful incentive to get him to give up one minute with her!

I dont think it matters which is run first just now,
back around the first of the year spybot was inccorectly fixing the winsox, which for some broke there internet access, but now that is corrected,, same story with Adawre when they were not keepng it updated before the newer version came out..

    Best regards
    Lonny

    Hi Pete,

I haven't run into any situation where running one or the other first had any meaning. AFAIK, Mike never did explain his reasoning.

When I do run into items flagged by one, I run the other to see if it will pick them up.

SSD did have a problem, prior to the most recent update, with picking up tracking cookies and also the problem that Lonny mentioned.

    Regards - Charles

I don't think it matter which one you run first, but if Mike told me to stand on my head and whistle "Dixie" to fix something, I'd probably give it a go!

Incidentally, does anyone have a problem with AdAware causing the cpu to run hot? My temp will rise + or - 10 degrees during an AdAware scan, but not with Spybot. When the scan is finished, it drops back to normal.

I'd say just for ease of use, if using the free version of Ad-aware, probably easiest to run spybot first since the free Ad-aware makes you check each item. The paid version has a 'select all' feature. And only critical the first couple of runs since with regular use and a hit with spybot's immunize feature, you shouldn't be looking at many hits.

As to the order, I have no real reason to prefer one over the other. But I think that lots of folks who come here in a panic looking for help feel better with very specific directions so I say to run the one before the other.

In the free version of Adaware you can select all items at once by right clicking on the list and choosing "select all objects ". ;)

When I run Ad-aware (free) I have the right-click and select all.

In Spybot-S&D I have to check items individually.

You will have a select all items button with Spybot if you click the settings button, then settings under that heading and scroll down to expert settings and check 'show expert buttons in results', while running in the advanced mode.

    Thanks for that, Dave!

I´ve always run it in easy mode because I don´t feel very advanced!

That's something that doesn't make any sense to me at all. To me, choosing easy mode should automatically select all and advanced mode should work just as it does. How many people that consider themselves beginners would have any idea what to select from the list? You just know that anybody new to this is most likely going to select the easy mode. I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people scratch there heads when they see the list of stuff and nothing's checked.

I might be misunderstanding this as I've never used easy mode myself so I don't know exactly how it works. Guess I'll have to take a look.

    Hi Zander!

A friend of mine called for help and when I went to him, I started by cleaning the thing out. He had a lot of entries in the Spybot-S&D (easy mode) list. A lot of it was checked for removal by Spybot-S&D (deemed safe to remove) but the balance was not checked. When doing so, I had to check them one by one.

In advanced mode, a "select all" button can be activated which makes the task easier. E.g. You can select all and deselect two in stead of selecting twenty manually.

Maybe "easy mode" should be renamed to "newbe mode" since it doesn´t give You the option to select all without having a look.

Under Start / All programs, I have a "Spybot - Search and Destroy" folder with three options: Easy mode, Advanced mode and Uninstall.

It´s two diffeent ways to launch the program.

Spybot defaults to "easy mode" from the desktop icon it makes during set up. Click start, all programs and check the listing for Spybot- mine has advanced, easy and an uninstall. I do not tell people who are not comp savvy to use advanced mode. Many of the things flagged in advanced are "features" to some users. Some registry changes are legit, depending on your choice of software. Using Spybot to "correct" those "problems" will make a mess, or render those apps useless. Before you use advanced mode, be sure you understand what you are doing- do not check all and fix without looking up what you don't understand. Spybot advanced is a powerful tool in the right hands. Spybot in easy mode is "idiot proof" enough for casual users, and still effectively flags the real problems that needs fixed.

Lately, I've been running Spybot more frequently than my paid version of AdAware. AdAware only seems to find the data miners that WeatherBug keeps putting back. Yeah, I know WBug is "spyware ", and it is the only exception I make on my system for spyware. If I could find a program as convenient and accurate that was clean, I'd switch, but here the weather changes suddenly- and we never know what Indiana is going to throw at us! Spybot and AdSubtract Pro (worth the few dollars!) are excellent for detecting and deleting tracking cookies, which is all my system seems to pick up, anyway. They both flag them in red, and remove them in one click. It is easier to PREVENT spyware than clean it up- now if I could only teach that to my friends!
