I have recently managed top get ahold of an old computer, and after formating installed windows 98(se). Now i have noticed that even though i did a custom install windows seems to have installed alot of unwanted stuff, such as all that Msn kr*p. Now, i'm a perfectionist, i like knowing what everyhting does, what it is and when i'm supposed to use it. Unfortunatly windows does not seem to cater to this personality type, or at least not easily. So, when i found a whole heap of msn stuff floating around in a folder called Oobe in the windows\system folder i killed it. Now i'm sitting here wondering if i may have possibly killed something i might have needed in my fit of stupidity. So please, tell, have i deleted something i may have needed (i automatically presumed that i wouldn't need any Out-Of-Box-Experiences).

Also, could you give me information on other folders i might want to get rid of, or possibly a guide that might tell me what it is that i might want, or possibly lend a better understanding to all the doodad's inside the windows folder.

Thanks for reading this, any help wil be greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely
    Whiplash

Have to admit, I had never even looked in that folder until just now. Looks like all MSN Internet browser stuff. Default favorites and links and junk like that. Shouldn't cause any problems unless you decide to use that browser.

Excuse my audacity for questioning you, but are you sure. I'm just completely paranoid that i'll end up having to reformat. Could you possibly find out for sure??:D

    Thank you very, very much

Sure? No. As I said, I've never even opened that folder till just now. Only an assessment of what I saw in that folder(and I opened everything). Sit back and wait for someone who is familiar with it to post in, or just restore it from recycle bin till you're sure you want to get rid of it. It's only 3.55MB so it's not taking up alot of space.

Whiplash, when I install Win98, clean, overlay, or upgraded, the C:\Windows\System\Oobe is the first thing I delete. It is for setting up MSN internet service. You'll get it even if you do not select any Online Service to install. After deleting, run a registry cleaner and you'll find that it does have some entries in the registry.
Delete the C:\Program Files\Online Services, also.
The rest of the windows folders, I would leave there.
MS Regclean, there are some other things here that may peak your interest, but 98 handles memory fine on it's own, per your other thread. You could try Start\Run and type in Sysmon, and configure the System Monitor as to what you want to see.
Please use a meaningful subject heading when starting a new thread.

Hey thanks alot mark, that's the reassurance i've been waiting for, i am however going to reformat my computer anyway, just for practice. But i'll now feel alot safer when i kill that folder a second time :D

I thought my title was meaningful, it related to the subject matter and still managed to be eye catching, i think i should go into advertising for work as good as that :D

    Thanks alot

Whiplash--Control Panel|Add/Remove should offer you the opportunity to uninstall the MSN stuff or within the C:\Program Files\MSN folder, there should be an uninstall or Unwise file to uninstall.
You want to uninstall, not delete.
I hate to see anyone have to reformat, though since this seems to be a new install of the OS based on whatever installation medium you have available, I would assume you will just reinstall the MSN stuff anyway.
And since markp62 is on the WindowsBBS staff, perhaps his suggestion is one to consider.
