I have recently re-installed Win98SE,and all is fine except-Each time I try to set up a new dial up connection in Dial Up
Networking,a spurious extra phone number appears in the final
"Connect To" box, either partly instead of, or in addition to, the correct
number. This obviously prevents the correct dial up.
If I correct or delete this number,I can then successfully click
"Connect" and get online. Also,if my connection goes
    down,clicking "Reconnect" usually works fine!
Clearing all(note!) dial up connections for a fresh start has no effect on
the problem-this number always reappears.I do not have to dial for
an outside line, and the number is a plain number, actually part of one of my ISPs,not an area
code.As far as I know,I`m the only "user" in the system, but I wonder if an error has occurred. The
number thus,is one of mine, and not an interloper. Is there a file or
Registry entry that can be edited to remove the miscreant? BTW,where are these numbers stored? Any
    other possiblities? Thanks!

    'Dats Weird!

So, after attempting to make a new DUN connection, does that spurious phone number fragment also show up in the DUN general tab, where the phone number is stored(Cntl Panel>Rt Click on your Modem>click Properties)?

One of the reg experts will have to answer for its exact reg location, but try running a registry checker (like Reg First Aid, JV16, or Karens Registry Pruner) to see if it will pick up a screwy reg entry to at least point in the right direction to look in. (Or maybe i garbled that you already had)

I let this roll around in my head for a bit, maybe something will click. But for now, delete all PWL files located in the Windows folder, it is harmless to do this. Reboot, you will need to log onto windows upon startup.
PWL files contains some info for DUN.
