    Hi,

We are getting the following message when we try to run an Symantec online virus scan on our Windows 98SE computer:

    "Microsoft Internet Explorer
Your current security settings prohibit running active X controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly "

We also have a Windows XP Home computer home networked with the Windows 98 SE computer (Wired cable modem with a D-link Broadband Router).

We have IE 6, SP1 on both computers and the security settings are the same on both.

We can run the Symantec online virus scan OK on the Windows XP computer but not on the Win 98 computer.

We also tried to run an RAV AntiVirus Online Virus Scan on our Win 98 computer but we get the same message as above.
The RAV scan will run on the Win XP computer.

Does anyone know what would cause this problem?

    Thanks.

Are you sure your ActiveX settings are the same on each PC? (IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Level)
As you know, that is a standard message when ActiveX controls should be permitted to run for a page to function completely as the writer intended, but are blocked. Frankly, if you can just click the message off, and use/view the page without further ado, I would forget about it.
Of course if the scans will not run that is another matter, and you should first check the ActiveX settings as mentioned.
I cannot imagine this has anything to do with the ActiveX message, but to get the AV scans to run, what about disabling your firewall?

    Hi Jim,
    Thanks for the reply.

I checked every security setting on our Win98 computer vs our WinXP computer and they are identical but I'm still getting the same message as before regarding Active X Controls.

I tried disabling Zone Alarm but that didn't help.

I tried repairing and then reinstalling IE6, SP1 but that didn't help either.

I just can't run the online virus scan on the Win98 Computer. Can't figure out what's going on.

    jslow--Hope someone else can help.
The only other thing I can think of is IE Repair Tool.
    Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information|Tools|Internet Explorer Repair Tool|Wait|Reboot.

Try adding the scan site to your IE trusted sites long enough to run the scan.

    WelshJim,
Please tell me that you meant disabling the firewall while offline only! And you cannot run online scans that way...

    jslow,
Do you use any other firewall/AV protection besides your router? Some Internet Security programs disable Active X by default.

I would double check the settings that Jim described on the 98 comp, and run Panda which has its active X "built in ".

You can check your active X here.

    HTH,
    Johanna

    Hi Newt & Johanna,
    Thanks for the replies.

    Johanna
I have the free Zone Alarm version 37_211 installed on both computers.

I have Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro, Spy Bot, Ad Aware and Pop Up Stopper installed on the Win XP computer.

I have been trying to install NSW 2004 Pro on Win 98 but it will no longer install (It installed once but had a bad slowdown on the computer so uninstalled it). Have been trying to reinstall it (primarily for AV protection) but was getting errors and now it won't even start to install. That's why I wanted to run the online AV scan (for Symantec).

I'll try the test on Active X and the Panda Active Scan and let you know what happened.

    Thanks again

    Johanna--
No, I meant to disable the firewall and then try to run the online scan. jslow had made it clear he wanted to run online scans. I think the danger from running without a firewall for a few minutes is not very great, and if successful in running the AV scan, then he would know the firewall is the problem. He is also running on a network, so presumably has a router. That may or may not affect the scanning anyway.

jslow--There is some small chance that you did not uninstall NAV 2004 completely, and this is preventing reinstallation. You could search around the Symantec site for more info.
The best I could find were articles for un/reinstalling NAV 2003.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...65256c96003548a6?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam
    No harm in trying.

We tried to run "Test your Active X" and we got the same error message as we got before when we tried to run the online virus scan.

    Jim
We went through procedures in about 10 different Symantec documents for uninstalling and reinstalling Norton SystemWorks 2004 Pro. We were getting errors while trying to reinstall.
Now we can't even start to install it. When we click on install, nothing happens.
When we click on NSWSetup.exe, nothing happens.
We talked to Symantec today and they are going to send us another CD.

In the meantime we reinstalled NSW 2003 pro and ran a Norton Virus scan and no virus was found. BTW, NSW 2003 installed without any problems.

We were referred to "Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines" at "
    mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
and tried some of these suggestions but so far we are still getting the same error message.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Don't know if we will ever solve this problem

jslow--Sorry I could not have been of any help. Keep us posted if the new CD makes any difference.
I am impressed you actually were able to talk to someone at Symantec. :D
    For free??

I didn't talk to anyonein Tech Support. After numerous e-mails I was given a customer service phone number.

    Ann
I don't have Pop Up Stopper on our Win98 computer; just on our WinXp computer.

    Thanks

    Sorry jslow,

I see we typed at the same time. I figured a Popup Stopper problem was to simple and you would have eliminated this before the other things you've tried.

I was hoping to edit my post before I embarrased myself. Oh well....

    Hi All,
We received the new NSW 2004 Pro CD on 3-5-04 & tried to install it. It would not install. We finally decided to re-format and reinstall the factory software from the recovery CD on our Win 98SE Computer.
With this computer we also received a Software Selections CD & on this CD was Norton Antivirus 5+. When we started to install software from this CD we noticed that NAV 5+ was checked for installation.
Apparently this is what happened the last time. We tried to install NSW 2004 Pro without uninstalling NAV 5+ and this caused all the problems.

Previously, in the process of uninstalling NSW 2004 Pro, we must have gotten most, but probably not all,Symantec files off the computer.
This allowed us to reinstall NSW 2003 Pro but then we had problems with Active X controls and IE 6.

After reformatting and reinstalling the Factory software, we installed NSW 2004 Pro without any problem.
We then tried the PCPitStop Active X Test and we got the dialog box to click on & then the date & time appeared.

So far this has seemed to solve our problems.

Hope this info will help someone else with a similar problem.

    Thanks again for everyone's help.

    Hi chaosrn,

The IE repair did not help my problem.

I found the IE repair in Control Panel, Add/Remove program.

On our computers, if you click on "Remove" for Internet Explorer, they give you the choice to repair or remove.

As I mentioned, I had to reformat the hard drive and then reinstall Win98 and software programs from the IBM Product Recovery CD.

    Good luck.

My experience with Symantec has been to go offline, completely uninstall the Norton product, reboot, and install the next Norton product. Then hold your breath and cross your fingers. It is actually easier and faster to reformat the drive and reinstall all the programs and apps than to try to completely remove Norton from a system. I just had a horrendous experience upgrading NIS 2003 to 2004 on a relative's computer, and I will post about that in another thread. Anyway, glad you fixed it, jslow and thanks for posting back with your solution.
