I'm having real trouble with the legacy USB support on my Asus P4S800. I bought a USB keyboard for this machine but I still can't disconnect the temporary PS/2 one for good. When I boot up, if the USB keyboard is plugged in, the MB hangs while looking for an OS (it can hang in one of two places but the floppy light always gets stuck on, whether USB legacy support is enabled or not. (Once I'm in Windows I can plug it in no problem.) Also, if I do enable USB Legacy support and do the plug-it-in-afterwards trick my PS/2 mouse stops working! I think it's a BIOS problem but every time I try to update it the website is down (one time it wasn't but the zip was corrupted). What can I do about this problem? Is there a USB > PS/2 converter plug available or something?

Just going to bump this one up for you wiffles. I was hoping someone would be along with some help.

I had, quite literally, the same problem with a motherboard about 3 months ago. Ended up sending it back. It would hang on boot if the USB printer was plugged in before Windows was fully loaded. Once you were booted, you could plug it in and it worked fine. Shut down, and boot back up...same happened. I harrassed every geek friend I had, and sat on the phone with tech support. Nothing worked.

I certainly hope you have better luck.

I managed to get a working bios file and updated it. Mostly the same problem, but I noticed something else: sometimes (I'll see when it actually is) if I have a disk in the A drive and remove it after I get the usual complaint everything seems to go okay. But this doesn't always happen and what would someone think if you told them your PC wouldn't boot up unless you inserted a disk that didn't have an OS on it? :D

Yep...that's one of the fixes I was given as well. To flash a brand new board. Didn't do a thing. (sigh)

Is there an adaptor that lets you use a USB keyboard in a PS/2 slot? (Stupid Wiffles, of course there isn't, they all work the other way. :) ) Or should I contact ASUS themselves about this one?

I wonder if you've connected the ribbon to the floppy the wrong way round?

Wiffles's statement implies that the disk in A: can be read, which means that the cable is connected correctly. Otherwise (in my experience), the drive light would be on all the time, and the disk would be unreadable.

I had one computer that wouldn't even boot if the A: drive's cable was connected incorrectly. That one took awhile to figure out! :)

So should I contact ASUS or is there a way to fix this?

    USB to PS2 adapter, here's a picture:

Try a google search for "usb ps2 adapter ". Might find one at your local electronics store.

Had success with getting a USB mouse to run by upgrading the BIOS.

    Wiffles ...

Can I assume, now that you've updated the BIOS, that you've actually gone into it and made sure that USB is enabled? If you have, I think it's time to talk to ASUS.

    Matt ...

I've used a USB-PS2 adapter successfully with a USB mouse, but not with a USB keyboard. Tried it on my laptop just this morning (with the USB KB I use with it all the time), and no luck.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but that means to me only that you flashed the BIOS with the new version. It doesn't mean that after you did so you actually went into the BIOS to make sure that the settings hadn't been changed by the update, and that they were as you want them.

    Anyway, good luck with ASUS.

    USB printer prevents boot.

Same problem here with an HP USB scanner. Scanner plugged in, no boot. Not plugged in, machine boots, plug in scanner after boot, works as advertised.

Scanner first plugged in to hub, then to front USB port. Problem.

Per suggestion from this board, plugged scanner direct to MOBO in rear. Machine boots with scanner plugged in. ??????????

Now the payoff: Buy new HP Printer, USB, seems parallel printers are now keeping the Dodo birds company. HP says don't plug printer into hub, will create problems. Unplug scanner from MOBO, install printer software, plug to recently vacated USB port, all is fine, except no scanner. Plug scanner into hub just to see what happens. No problem, machine boots, scanner works, printer works.

    Go figure.

    Martin

No, I reset the settings (like it said I should do) and tried both combinations (and they both failed). No need to worry. :)
