    I've done clean installs before but never encountered this before.
    When I type E:setup I get the message
    cdr101not ready reading drive f. Can anybody help me with this?

    Hi warrenbf

    You could try installing from the hard drive.
    Insert your boot disk and start the computer.

    Select, Start with CD-ROM support.
    When you get the A:\ prompt put the 98CD in the drive
    and type the following hitting "Enter" after each line.

    c:
    mkdir win98cab

    [now type your cd-rom drive letter, lets say it's E:]

    e:
    cd\win98
    copy *.* c:\win98cab

    [after files are copied, type the following]

    c:
    cd\win98cab
    setup

    This should install from the hard drive.

    The error message you posted says you have a problem reading the F: drive, perhaps the lens or the CD is dirty.

    What happens when you just type:
    E:
    <Enter>
    ?

    Can you get a directory of E:?
    dir
    <Enter>
