 I can't remember the name of the System Tool I used, or HOW to access it, but I recall having run a Windows tool/program (fairly certain it was in XP Home Ed, but may have been 98, or both) that checked my files and let me search for a specific file - I could enter the file name, and then use the tool to locate a backup copy on the system, or find and replace/copy the file from the Windows XP CD. Is it "chkdsk" or is there another tool that does what I've described? I would appreciate any and all feedback - thank you, and have a good week.

Are you talking about "sfc /scannow" ...system file checker?
If so go to the microsoft help and support and look for article KB 310747.

    Thank you Yarddog,

I've added the KB Article to my Help Desk and Forums folder, and will make use of the information. Have a good week!

SFC in 98 would allow you to pick and choose which files to replace. SFC in XP will not. It does it's own thing automatically and you can only see what was replaced when done.

See this thread for more info on SFC in XP.

Thank you Dave - appreciate the added information, and the difference you pointed out (sfc in 98 versus XP), to some extent, explains my failure to recognize the program. Thanks again, and take care.
