I have an old g6 Gateway, 450 ., Win 98. I would like to clean it up and start new from a restore disc. Is this a good thing to do? It's very slow to bootup these days, and I figured it's time to clean out the old garbage on the drive. Is this the best way to do it?
    Thanks,

Yes, wiping it clean and starting over is the best way to clean out the junk and, yes, use the CDs that came with it since that will restore it to factory condition, including all the drivers.

Before you reformat i would advise that you go to the windows update catalogue and download all the critical updates for 98 put then on to cd so that you have them for the future. Also make sure you have your virus program up to date and ready, if you look in c/windows/programfiles/??????your virus program???? copy this file to a floppy or cd as this will have all the updates for the virus program, saves having to download again and safer. Make sure you also have your firewall program on hand before you go back online after reformat, i got cought by the blaster this way

Ignore the above. Blaster worm does not affect windows 98.

What i was trying to get across to rgn was the need to protect the computer when it goes back online. With no fire wall or anti virus programs it is likely to pick up a virus, trogen etc. I run XP and 98 on my computers, the Blaster virus came through on the XP before i realised i hadnt put up the fire wall.

There's nothing better than a bran spanking clean computer to play with, just protect it, or all your hard work getting it to that state will be wasted and you will have to do it again.
