I would like to post something about NS 7.1 (not so much a problem, but an observation).

NS 7.1 seems not handle low memory or the Win swap file properly. It used to crash repeatedly when I d/l'd lots of files. My PC is a 200 mhz Pentium 1, with 96 mb ram, 250 mb fixed swap.

If I had anything else in memory the crashing happed sooner. Clearing the cache and Download Manager (a useless piece of @#$%) helped, if done often.

It crashed hard one day forcing me to reinstall Windows 98. Then NS 7 would not run for more than an hour and a few dozen files. I upped the swap from an install default 100mb to 500mb, and now NS stays up for most of the day, and a few hundred files d/l'd.

(NOTE: I do a lot of proprietary cartooning, hence the "lots of files" up and down.)

I am changing to a new PC, 2.8 ghz, 1 gb ram, 4 gb swap, so the problem "should" go away. I discovered this site today (6 months too late, I may add) when seeking how to transfer my total profile to the new PC. Now I know how. The Yahoos at Netscape only ignored my pleas for help. And they wonder why people are switching to IE.

    Welcome to the Forum, JGB!

    Hi JGB,

Thank you for sharing your observations on Netscape 7.1. I can imagine that you must be looking forward to using the new PC.

Might I suggest to you, that you don't install Netscape 7.1 on the new PC. It does have the serious Resource Leak, and Installer Bug. Netscape 7 is now defunct, and there will be no more development of the Netscape 7 browser.

Try Mozilla 1.6 if you want a fast, stable, browser. It is an impressive improvement over Netscape 7.1.

Mozilla 1.6 Download - Release Notes

    FWIW,

What are the Pros & Cons to Mozilla

    I appreciate your candor.
If my concerns below are answered somewhere, just point me.

How does Mozilla compare to NS 7.1? There are some neat features in NS 7 that I would want, mainly the "TAB" in a Window.

Can it accept my old NS profiles (with 2 accounts), bookmarks, mail folders and the like?

How do I transfer all that to my new PC? (It will be running XP-Home)

What will AOL/Netscape do to replace Ver 7? Or did they buy it to kill it in favor of MS-IE? Like I surmised when the buyout occured and they did not make NS their default browser.

    JGB,

Mozilla has all the features that you have in Netscape, with the exception of the proprietary Netscape Instant Messaging, and the ability to access Webmail from within the Mail & Newsgroups component. Webmail will have to be accessed through the web portal.
    Absolutely.
Look at this guideline: Transfer Profiles from PC to PC
Netscape is defunct, and AOL fired the Netscape employees. There will be no further development of Netscape. They killed it!

Let us know if you have further questions.
