Hi wondered if anyone can help.
I have an old laptop with a celeron 900/128/100 processor and wondered what desk top mother board if any this would fit into.

I would like to build a base unit for a friend and have some parts from her old machine and my old desk top (floppy, cd rom, hard drive atx case and power unit) that i will be able to use. i know she needs memory ( this i have 3 x 64mb pc100), processor and main board and wondered if someone could give advice. The processor from my old lap top is 18m old and as far as i can tell looks the same, fitting wise as the one i put in the computer that i built for my children. but im not sure if processors you get in laptop and desk tops are different or not???????.

The board i put in the childrens computer was the Asus A7V8X-X/LAN would this processor and memory go with it.

A bit garbled i know but i will give more info if i know what you or anyone needs to know,

    Thankx
PS Pete C computer that i built with your help is going great kids love it

    Hi Stitch

Glad to hear all is going well with 'your' m/c :)

The Celeron in your laptop is almost certainly a mobile Celeron - a totally different animal to that fitted into desktop p/c's. Power rating/supply totally different, etc.

    Hi Pete
Thanks for that, it was worth a shot if it saved my friend a few pennies.

    One more question.
My friend has a pentium 11 processor in her old machine which again looks very similar to my new one and the one out of my old lap top, (flat square with pins). would this go in the Asus board. My old P11 processor was huge black box rather than the small nice, neat and trim ones of today. I will have to have a propper look at her comp to get the specs on it.

    Stitch.

Pentium II's are a bit like dinosaurs - extinct and you will not get a mobo for one, except the one your friend already has :D - and likewise the memory will fit only your friend's old board, not current boards. Very little point in thinking of a rebuild using the old processor/mobo/memory - it can't be done. Could probably speed up the m/c with more memory, but that's about it.

The Asus board you have is for AMD processors only - if you want to use one of those boards - about £48 - the cheapest processor would be an AMD Athlon 1.67 Ghz at about £45 and 256 Mb PC 2100 memory at about £30 or 512 Mb at about £55

    Thanks Pete
When i built my kids their comp i did get all the new parts that you suggested, which is why mine works ok. My friend is extremly short of cash and we were just trying to find other alternatives. Looks like she will have to go the same way i did.
    Thanks for the help anyway

What's the problem with her old m/c - just slow?

Post the mobo details + OS - if you like, plus installed memory, HD size and we'll see if there are any worthwhile improvements that can be made to it.

If you haven't got it/used it Aida32 will give you the info.

    Ok Pete
    Here's what I could find

Sound Card, Creative Tech 94 Vibra 16.

Intel MMX (TM) 200mhz Processor. (funny looking spikey green thing sat on top)

    Seagate Medalist 4321 Model ST34321A 4gb HDD

    Samsung VA34323A 4gb HDD

Torisan CD Rom Model CDR S112

    Generic Floppy

2x pc100 CL2 16x64 memory (one of which came from my old comp)

1x im not sure what memory but it is 96mb??????
    Altogether 224mb

Graphics card ????? but way out of date newish fractionaly higher spec kids games dont even play as it has asked for direct x8 and this card does not support this.

    Windows 98SE

Mother board ??????????? could not find any ref to it. But it seems to be in two parts, one large board that lays flat in the case and another that runs the same length but lays side ways on like the graphics, sound and modem cards

    modem is new at christmas.

Altogether a lot of rubbish i think

did think about putting my graphics card in her machine and buying myself a new one then at least the games would play. (happy kids) Give her time to get some money together.

Comp reformatted recently so is as fast as it can be i think. only office on it and half a doz kids games.

    What do you think

Somehow I just knew you were gonna say that.

After looking inside last night I disturbed the dust and this morning it jumps and crashes. I think the dust held it together. She has no choice now I think.

    Thanx
