vpn question

newbie to vpn...

I hav 2 xp pro PC's, at different locations.
both with ZoneAlarm
windows XP firewall disabled
neither system is behind router/gateway.
both PC's connected directly to ADSL internet modem.
I disabled zonealarm on both PC's for test.

I set up vpn server on PC 1 using the network setup wizard.
I then setup a vpn connection on PC 2.
I could not connect. (error: 800 unable to establish connection)

when i ping server from client i get
request timed out.

when i ping client from server i get
PING: transmit failed, error code 65.

any suggestions??
