    Hello to all!

I am having trouble trying to keep the Microsoft Office 97 toolbar and fast find items from loading at start-up. (I reinstalled this program from a CD as I had somehow lost the spell checking & grammar functions in MS Word and OE.) Now I am unable to keep these two items from loading at start-up.

I have gone to start>run>msconfig>startup and have tried "unchecking" those 2 items SEVERAL times...they just keep appearing "checked" after every reboot or start!

I do notice, however, 2 instances that they are shown listed in that start up. One is listed as:
    C:\Progra~1\Micros~2\Office\findfast.exe and the other
    C:\Progra~1\Micros~3\Office\findfast.exe

(The same for the office toolbar). It's the one with the number "3" that will not remain unchecked.

I can do a crl+alt+del to end these programs but would rather they not even start.

Is there some easy fix for this? (Or have I messed things up too much for a simple fix  )

    Appreciate any help offered!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki

It's a while since I ran Office 97 but I think the answer lies in .....

Add/Remove Programs > MS Office > Remove - this should bring up the option to Add/Remove features - remove Office Shortcut bar - not sure if Fast Find is featured here or not.

Have a vague recollection that Fast Find put an icon in Control Panel - look there and see if it can be disabled.

There's a neat little program here: http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml called Startup Control Panel that should give you complete control of what you have loading at startup... much easier to use than msconfig.

Just install it then go to Start/Control Panel and in the left pane look for "other control panel options" under the see Also heading.:)

The easiest way is to remove both from the StartUp folder on the Start menu.

Another way is to right click on the Office Shortcut Bar (on an empty area) and choosing "Close" or "Exit" (or something like that...it's been a while). It will ask if you want to load it on the next startup, tell it "no" and that should do it.

The "correct" way to disable Find Fast requires that you delete the Find Fast index files. To do this, use the following steps:

    1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Find Fast.
    3. In the "Index for documents in and below" list, click the first item.
    4. On the Index menu, click Delete Index. In the Delete Index dialog box, click OK. When you are prompted whether to delete the index, Click OK.
    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until no more indices are listed.
    6. On the Index menu, click Close And Stop. Then, click OK to stop Find Fast.

Then remove the Microsoft Find Fast shortcut from the StartUp folder (on the Start Menu)

    Thanks!

Once again this BBS has come to my rescue! Thank you all for your replies and your suggestions.

I did follow your directions, Miz (thank you for being so explicit!) and everything is working properly now! I even went to the start>run>msconfig>startup to make sure I didn't have to "uncheck" anything just in case I had made an error somewhere when following your directions! :)

So thanks again, I truly appreciated the help!

    Sincerely,
    Vicki
