    Hi,
Recently while tweaking and messing around with startup programsand after numerous Ad Aware scans to remove spyware
i get this message on shutdown

    rundll.exe not responding end now?
i then click end now then sometimes this comes up
    explorer.exe not responding end now?
after clicking end now my pc shutsdown normally
does anyone know how to fix/repair this?
    Also
Could someone direct me or tell me what are the Necessary XP startup components required to run XP?
I want to stop everything except whats needed from starting up
    Thanks :)

    Welcome to the boards acidglacius

How about using one of your restore points to a time before you started "Tweaking "?

You can use the list here to tell you what is safe to uncheck under msconfig's start up tab, or of course, ask us! :)

yes restoring would be a good idea but that "tweaking" was also removeing numerous trojan horses from my pc so would restoring a point bring back those trojans?

Run a virus check from 1 or all of these .

System Restore option in Windows Me/XP
    http://www.augustana.ab.ca/other/cns/virus/
    http://www.adamtj.org/repository/howto/W32.Blaster.Worm/
Users of Windows Me and Windows XP should temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file onto your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows documentation, or one of the following articles:

Drivers - if you just downloaded them, no problem. If you actually installed/loaded them, they will probably be removed.

MP3 files - system restore is just that. System files and a very few specialized other files such as some applications (M$ stuff and not all of that) along with a few essential fonts.

Personal files shouldn't be touched unless you've manually tweaked the list of files that system restore includes/excludes and you'd know if you'd done that.

With the way your system is behaving at this point, I don't see that you have much choice in any case. You about 99.9% probably have a virus problem that needs fixing.

    It's spyware.
Use the links to adaware or spybot, or bith, in Newt's signature.

Yeah i just did a system restore and it fixed the Shutdown RUNDLL32 error
Iam just starting to use Ad Aware now so i will post back on progress
How is all this Goddamn spyware getting on my PC?
Is it because i dont use a firewall>?
Is norton personal firewall good enuff to use?
What can you recommend for me? i.e Zonealarm
I have Windows XP Home and currently 1 LAN computer acces the net thru my PC and a AMD 1.8 Ghrtz Processor and 256mb of RAM

After installing Norton Personal the same message comes up
    saying
Norton Personal Firewall has deteccted that an internet/network communication is trying to acces Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
    Application scvhost.exe

Local service INbound UDP on bootps port 67
    Remote address Unknown
Is this anything to be concerned about?
can i prevent it from accesing the internet without any negative affects
this is the only process i dont really trust/ understand that is trying to acces the net
i can tell others are ok like Ad aware or Internet Explorer
but im not sure on this one...
    Thanks:D

Spyware comes bundled in software, or from links you click on while surfing. Internet worms enter your unprotected (no firewall) PC. The XP has a built in firewall (incoming only) enabled by default, but I suggest a good third party program. Do a search on the board for some excellent suggestions. Some routers have the ability to act as a firewall.

    Good internet security policy includes:
    * up to date AV protection
    * a good firewall
    * common sense (the ability to read and understand a EULA!)
    * do not open Spam, ever, period.
    * regular scans with AdAware and Spybot (Use the "Immunize" feature in Spybot)
    * Never be online unless the above procedures are being used.

    HTH

That listing of what is safe to uncheck is interesting. I've wondered about some entries I've seen, unchecking them with no problems but would wonder where they came from. Thanks for the knowledge!

An excellent list of MS services to enable, disable or start manually can be found at Black Viper along with good explanations for tweaking to suit your computer needs.

Bridge.dll is spyware. Download, update and run Spybot and Ad-aware. Delete all they find. Wouldn't hurt to run CWShredder also. If these don't remove it, download HijackThis, scan and save log file. Open it with notepad and paste it here (suggest you start a thread in security with it) so some of the more experienced here can check it. Don't fix anything with it yet.

    EDIT
Just reread this thread and see you have already run Ad-aware. Do Spybot too. It catches things Ad-aware doesn't. And CWShredder is specialized for coolwebsearch hijackers and it's variants.
