I'm attempting to put a Password into the Administrator User of my Win XP Home. I have never used a password, never set one when I installed or reinstalled Win XP Home.

Have a young grandson visiting for a week and I want to have him use the Guest Account and password protect the Admin. So, now that I'm trying to set a password it indicates that I already have a password and I need to enter it to change to what I want. This is confusing to me.

Just me that normally uses the PC so I didn't think I needed one. Now I do because I know "young minds" as I was there once. So, any direction offered to get around this. I don't have the least idea what might be set as a password, none at all.

You can go here to a site that is very good and easy to understand all about passwords and security. :)

That's all well and good, but it doesn't help me now , today! My visitor is due this afternoon.

I'm still confused about if I never did set a Password, how could I possibly enter it to change to a new one?

Did you try to hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice at the log on screen and (since you might NOT have set a password)... hit enter? If that works...then go to control panel ... users accounts ... then set up a password from there.

Maybe I wasn't clear about my questions and problem. I presently have no problem in starting the PC. It never asks for a password. Don't even get the password window. Have had it this way for years.

But now, I want a passord for the Administrator Account, and if necessary for the Guest Account also, that doesn't matter.

So when I am up and running I go to the Control Panel and Accounts, get to the Administrator and try to set a password. That's when it wants me to enter the present password before I can set one. That's what I don't have to enter. No matter what I do, try to change or just enter a password, it wants the present password.

I have tried to just skip that by tapping Enter and going to the New Password. It won't take that, insists I put in the present password.

Starting and logging on is no problem. That's what I'm trying to do is stopping this auto on stuff. I want to prevent a user from logging on to the Administrator with a password.

Hope this makes it more clear.

The link doesn't work. Something about reorganization of the site.

OK, finally got that. My problem: If I'm gone for the day and the grandson want on the PC. As it is now, my name and password is asked for. So if he doesn't know that, how does he get by that to log in as Guest? The way I see it now is if my name and password is not entered, it won't start up.

This is all elementry I'm sure, but I don't know!

Ack the only way I know how to do it . Tweakui>logon if you have made a Guest Account it will showup in there. Check it so it shows on the welcome screen.
I'm assuming you now have the welcome screen since your profile is showing up when you boot. I even have the Administrator account showing but I'm using pro and can get it without going to safe-mode.

Good...glad that's fixed...now just go to control panel...user accounts...activate the Guest account and leave the password blank...then when you turn on the computer he can just click on the Guest icon and he's good to go:p

Things are looking up. Now that I have a way for him to get in, I need to figure out a way to give him permissions. There is a game in the PC that he usually plays when visiting. I'm sure he will want that again. So, I got in with the Guest account and tried to play the game, no luck. It won't run. It will run when I log on as administrator.

I'll lay good money on the idea that there is a way to let him (Guest) access the game! I'm looking, but if you feel generous today with more tips, I'm open! Any by the way, thanks for your help on the other stuff.

I'm not real sure about this but it seems to work on my computer (XP Pro)...
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Click on Local Disk(C)
    3.Click on Documents and Settings
4.Click on your account (you have admistrative privledges)
5.Look in your account for the game you want and drag a copy of it (click on it and then hold the Ctrl key down) to the Guest account
6.Drop a copy of the game into the Guest account start folder
7.Log off as your account and log back on as a Guest
8.Open the start menu and the game should be there.
    9. Try the game to see if it works...if not then you will have to right click on it and go to properties and change the security permissions to allow Guest user to access it.

Hope this helps...it may be a round about way to do this but I don't know of a better way...maybe someone else does?!?

Got it! Maybe there was another way, this way (your way) took care of the problem. Now I'm set. Surely appreciate your time and advice. All is working just as I wanted it to.

Best of the day to you.
