For my Windows XP question I am not using the computer we are having difficulty with. I am on-line via another computer.

    Here is the problem:

    We have a new computer.
We buy Windows XP Home Edition CD.
We install Windows XP Home Edition.
    No problem except:

    1. We do not have a modem - don't want one !
    2. We do not want to go on-line - ever !

Yet after we installed Windows XP home Edition and turn on the computer - we get all those little pop up windows just above the task bar at bottom of the screen.

"Do you want to get automatic updates? "

Hang no - no modem. Stupid Windows - can it not detect that ?

Can't get the message to go away - instead we must click it.
That brings up the automatic update WIZARD - that leads to more.
We try to exit - "Are you sure you want to Quit?" More & more....

By this time I'm using language a lot stronger than 'heck' !!

So, Stupid me - How do I stop this horse manerue Bill Gates programmed into that Stupid XP ? All I want to do is turn on my computer, get into a word program and go to typing.

And then there is that "Messenger" **** - how do we rid ourselves once and for all of that garbage?

Ok, you can see we ain't too happy with Windows at this point.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Right click on My computer and go to properties.
Choose the automatic updates tab. Adjust accordingly.

To get rid of windows messenger....
    Start....settings......control panel
    Choose admistrative tools
    Double click Services.
Right click on Messenger...and go to properties.
Click on Stop.....and switch to disable.
    Apply...then ok.

    That help?

This relates to the "Messenger **** ".

If you are referring to the 'MSN messenger' that's appearing on the notification area (systray), the icon being greeish two people thing, then right click on that icon and open it. Click on Tools > Options... Click on General tab. Uncheck 'Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows'. OK. Next time you boot up it shouldn't start again.

    Hope this helps.

Please follow Daizy's suggestion too. You don't need that either. And there are lots of other things you don't need if this computer is not hooked up to anything else. We'll bother with these two things first.

Thanks - we got rid of all that.

Nothing else gives me any trouble like those two did.
We'll just leave well eneough alone as things seem to be working OK.
