    no audio when playing dvds

I hope someone can help me with this. I have an NEC VERSA LX laptop. My OS is Wndows 98 2nd edition. I have a Margi Dvd-to-go card for viewing dvds. The video is great, but I can't seem to get any audio. Have tried all the volume settings, but nothing works. I kind of figured that I might need a better audio driver, but don't have a clue which one will work or how to replace the one that is already there. I went to the device manager and searched for a better drver, but it keeps saying that I am using the best driver for my device. Does anyone have any suggestions for this problem?

Hi Beth - Welcome to the Board :)

A Google search finds this where it would seem that the product has been discontinued, but drivers can be downloaded from here

Thanks so much for your reply. I have already been to the Margi site and downloaded the drivers for the dvd-to-go. Made the card work, but no audio. Don't understand why. As I said before, I have tried all volume controls, but still no sound. Any other suggestions?

Download Aida32 - this should give you details of your sound card/chip. Maybe we can take it from there.

And a long shot - do you have NAV installed? I remember a problem on a friend's computer a long time ago where the on board sound would not work and it was a conflict with NAV. Don't know the solution as I didn't fix it!

Does the sound work OK otherwise?

What version of DirectX do you have installed? - Aida32 will tell you this.

I've just had a brief look at the manual - download from the driver page - at the bottom.

Have you configured the audio side of things?

Pete - Just downloaded Aida 32 and it says that I have an ES1970 Canyon 3D/ES1978 Maestro-2E Sound Card. Does this help? Also, I went to the user manual at Margi and looked at the audio settings. No matter what I try, the only setting for audio that I can even view (let alone change) is the language. Thanks again for all the help.

there is a sound driver for the ES1978 on the NEC site for the Versa LX win 98 - scroll down to sound and another at ESS Technology Inc .

Be careful to choose the right one!

This is the driver that I originally downloaded from the NEC site when I first installed the operating system. While I was on the NEC page that you linked me to, I read further down and discovered a link to "no sound while playing dvds ". This is apparently a common problem. It gives a solution, but I don't have the setting that they say to change. I can only conclude that prehaps my installation of the dvd card went awry. I will try an uninstall and reinstall and see if that helps. I appreciate your help so much, and will post back here if I get the thing working. In the meantime, if you get an ideas, please let me know.

Just wanted to let you know that after uninstalling and reinstalling and then starting over all together with a reformat, still couldn't get the thing to work. Don't really understand it. Will try something like power DVD and see if it will work with this system. Any suggestions for getting the Margi card to work will still be appreciated since I have already paid for it. Thanks.

At the FAQ it had this to say:
The VIDEO works fine but I am not getting any AUDIO from the DVD movies.
Since the DVD-to-Go card is capabling of sending digital audio format into your notebook, it is necessary for the IIS (I2S) or Zoomed Video (ZV) option to be enabled in order to take advantage of the great sound. Steps are below :
    1. Double click on the "yellow speaker" icon on your taskbar (should be located on the bottom right).
    2. Once you are in the Volume Control Panel, click on the OPTIONS tab and choose PROPERTIES to take you into the mixer device properties.
    3. With the "Adjust volume for" - PLAYBACK, make sure that Line-In, Aux, IIS, Zoomed Video/ZV Audio, 3D Wide are checked under "Show the following volume controls:"
    4. Click on "OK" to take you back to the Volume Control Properties.
    5. Ensure that the "MUTE" options are not checked under those controls.
    6. If you do not see an option for Zoomed Video or ZV Audio, you'll need to contact your audio chipset manufacturer for drivers that support Zoomed Video.

Pete, just wanted to let you know that the problem is finally solved! What an ordeal! The answer was in the Margi Card driver. The one that comes with the installation didn't work. In case anyone else ever has this problem, this is what you have to do. Uninstall the Margi card. Download the alternate driver from the Margi site. Extract the driver information and install from the extraction folder you chose. A software installation program will follow. Allow that to happen and presto! In restrospect it seems easy. It's just a matter of getting to the correct information and that was certainly a challange in this case. All the normal fixes just didn't work. Thanks one more time for all your help. I really appreciated it. Made me feel like I wasn't in this all by myself!
