    Hello

I've just built a new system using an Asus K8V deluxe m/b and AMD64 3200+ cpu. When the pc is powered up all the fans spin, the lights come on but the darn thing will not POST. There are no beeps at all and the fan on the Asus ATI 9600 video card spins up for a few seconds before stopping. I've checked every connection, and have swapped out the video card and memory.

Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing this?

    Cheers!

    Hi Sherpa

Could be something in the case
    shorting out the motherboard.
You could remove everything from the case,
lay it out on a table and give it a try.

Sounds a bit like a BIOS problem - check out the mobo battery and consider resetting the CMOS - see the manual for how.

    Other possibilities - faulty mobo/processor/HD/power supply :(

    Does the HD spin up?

My first calls would be memory or video - you've done that. Pete's right - clear CMOS and reconfirm all of your BIOS settings. Also make sure your CPU fan is connected to the right header.

    ;)

Thanks for the replies - problem sorted!

I'm cringing with embarrasment as I type this! The new Athlon64 motherboards require an additional 4 pin +12V supply from the power supply (like the P4 motherboards I have seen). Because we were using an old power supply without this additional plug, and because we didn't RTFM, it just didn't click that this was the problem. The board just wasn't getting enough juice. It took a fresh pair of eyes to spot the header on the m/b. We plugged in a new power supply and it booted fine.

    Cheers!

    Additional info

The reason there were no beeps is because this Asus board uses a voice to tell you what the specific problem is! We plugged in some speakers and it told us there was a cpu problem. Clever stuff.

Glad you sorted that :D Thanks for posting back.

I must admit the first thing I do with a new Asus mobo is to turn off that annoying voice!!! Mind you - it solved your problem so maybe it has a use.

I was just about to post and ask if you had the 12v pin attached.
