I bought a DFI, NB70-SC main board last week. Everything is running fine except for one mission-critical operation. My modem will not respond to an incoming call when attached to this board. I have tried it under Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 98 Second Edition.

What I have done so far:
    • I have removed all peripheral hardware except video and the modem in question.
    • I have moved the modem to other PCI slots.
    • After removing hardware as stated above, I have installed a freshly-formatted hard disk, loaded Windows 98.
    • I replaced this modem with two spares I keep that are exactly like it.
    • I have moved one of the modems to another machine and it works fine there.
    • I have sent faxes, and browsed the internet with no problem with this modem.
I have been using this modem brand and model for several years. It is the only modem I have found that will interface with all features of WinFax Pro, version 8, which I use to answer my business phone. It has worked successfully with the following boards: Soyo SY5EH/M, Shuttle HOT-591, Shuttle HOT-597, Asus P5-AB, Asus P5-A, Asus K7M, Asus A7N-266, Amptron PM-586LMR, Amptron K7-810LM.

    Any suggestions?

My first guess would be a com port assignment that is misconfigured. Check the BIOS settings for same. Perhaps something as simple as enable bi-directional communication or such.

    Hi Alex,

I didn't see this in your recap of things you've tried/checked. Is Wake on Ring set enabled in bios? Could also be "Wake on LAN or PCI modem ".

Just found this online at DFI in the manual for your mobo. Oops, tried to cut and paste and that didn't work. I'll parapharse, you're power supply must provide greater than 720mA on the 5VSB leg for this feature to work properly.

Didn't you just have a problem/issue with the power supply for this new mobo?

I've tried both Wake Enabled and Wake Disabled. Yes, I did have a power supply problem with this board; but, it has since been solved. The power supply I had was for a pre-P4 board; but, I replaced it with a 400-watt P4 power supply.

I expected you knew to check it, but since it wasn't listed just thought I'd mention it.

I read the faq's and hot news while at dfi "s site (getting their site to load was a quest unto itself) and found no mention of your problem. Also tried the newsgroups, found nothing for dfi.

I had to use dfi "s support once for an old 486 mobo, have mixed feelings about the result. But if the modem works on one board and not this one, sounds like they need to help you.

    Good Luck,
    Tin

OK, I got it solved. This modem has a couple of audio connectors that are supposed to be used to connect directly to whatever sound system you have, provided it has an auxilary or TAD connector. The DFI board has built-in sound with connectors for CD-ROM, TAD and auxilary. Well, I have never made that connection before, relying on the standard setup that works with all modems like it; but, I decided to try it on this system.

I disconnected that audio cable and it works fine now.
